I finally shaped my first SUP surfboard. "Did it my way"..
« on: December 10, 2011, 10:09:55 PM »
So my buddy was selling a handfull of these 12'x32"x 5" 2# EPS blanks w / wood stringers about a year ago. I bought one for $40 thinking I would make a big fishing/ family board. It sat up on the racks in my garage for the past nine months or so collecting dust. I finally started designing a board for it last month. I ended up being my new 9'-4" x 31" carver. I printed (plotted) out a full size shape to cut my templates and rocker with.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

The blank was huge and already had rocker, so I had to utilize the rocker and cut my much smaller board from the front of the blank. After cutting my templates, I clamped them to the blank and hot wired it.

I wanted to keep my shop from getting dusted with foam, so I built a containment box / 'Rocker Box'. I traced my rocker on to the sides of the box, and screwed a flexable guide the my router jig could follow. My router jig has the concave built into it. I kept adjustable plywood covers on the guide and had a vacuum into the box. I also had a vacuum on my router. I got almost no foam on the floor at all. It worked perfect and my rocker turned out perfect as well.

So I had this brilliant idea to hotwire the rail shape. I spent days rigging this heavy wire that would hold it's shape while cutting the foam. I used my template as a guide and had this jig that rolled along the guide. The first 6" into the rail, I just about "f''dd" the thing up. It over heated it, and a little extra spackle and it was filled..... So I said to myself 'you need to get some good beers, turn the music up, and start usings your hands. 3 beers later and I was freek'n stoked. My buddy is glassing putting another 'hot coat' on it tonight. I'll be riding it next week!

very neat way of cutting the rocker like that a lot with a little modification you could probably make that thing fully adjustable and then your options would be limitless! thanks for shareing

Great way to shape that board.  That rocker box is amazing!!!  Looking good so far, and can't wait to hear what you think of it in the water.
