Tripping?
« on: August 14, 2007, 03:44:11 PM »
Aloha! ;D
i'm on the Great Lakes and have been windsurfing 20 yrs, surfing 10 and got a SUP paddle last year, starting on a stock windsurfer and progressed to a surftech 12' ultra glide.

I'm thinking about paddling/ windsurfing a SUP the length of Lake Michigan (350 miles) over 10-14 days. Is anyone using a hybrid windsurf/paddleboard?

i'd like to use a single board for the whole trip: paddle on the morning glass and sail as the wind comes up in the afternoon (i'll have a chase van for gear).

What do you think?

i want what you're on!

heheheh.... the board that is.
sounds like quite the adventure and it really makes quite a bit of sense. i've seen conditions change from dead air and glass to blasting and wavy in a matter of minutes out here as i'm sure you have too. good to see another inland seafarer writing up this site.

i've tried the mistral pacifico for paddling but have yet to put a rig on it. might be something to do in the near future. do you have any other particular models in mind?
whoever invented the hole... knew nothing.

i have the starboard 12 6 which is rigged up for windsurfing.  I dont ws but the glide is amazing and much faster open paddle than the laird.

Cammar uses the smaller starboard and here is a clip that proves what this board can do

I have enjoyed the summer surf sessions on it and really fired up but I am working on getting shorter board for this winter.

Great all around board and I would certainly recommend this board over the Laird for the TUNA (over 200 pound) stand upper.   If you are paddling the distance you are talking about glide is critical.

Water-ratt,

this is an awesome undertaking.  Before you do it, I'd like to talk to you about it personally and how we might work it into an article for International Waterman.  Please shoot me an email when you get a chance (email address is on the site).

Good luck in your endeavors!

Aloha,

Mike

Just got back from one. East side of Catalina Island and back down. Of course we paddled with gear/food/water, but it would be a whole lot of fun with a chase van.

Used some 14' down wind boards I built and glassed leash loops onto to lash gear down. I'll start a thread, and get some pics going.

My brother is in Chicago right now (as of last night anyway) He is on a Starboard 12-6 and has his superfreak 8.0 with him.
http://www.ponohouse.com/ponoblog/?p=263 I think he has his email posted on the site. You may be able to see his setup if you can hook up with him. I wish I could have gotten a picture of him coming out of the four seasons with his board.
