Gym Routine
« on: November 08, 2011, 04:07:35 PM »
Looking for some advice or routines for the gym.  I'm trying to get back into it but I'm looking for a different workout.  I have had a hip replacment so running on a treadmill is out of the question.  I use the eliptical on a regular basis  do some circuits (push ups, weight assisist pullups, leg sled X10 eachX4 ). Pumped some iron for strength.

I can spend about and hour each session four days a week.

BTW I'm 49 started to SUP to improve my balance after hip surgery not all my muscles were firing properly and it has helped tremendously.

Winter in the midwest sucks and I need to drop some pounds - so any help would be appreciated!

Anything that you are doing that is more than you were doing before is good, especially if you enjoy it! To me, the enjoyment aspect is very important because that'll keep you coming back for more. Also, as long as I am happy with results it feeds into the enjoyment of it.

In my opinion, any well rounded program will include hitting all the major muscle groups on a fairly regular basis, the amount of work can totally vary (unless you're planning on being an elite athlete- then things get trickier!), and you should track your results to see if what you're doing is working.

Also, since you're looking to lose some weight along with gaining muscle, look into some diet changes. That'll make things go way more smoothly. There's a couple good threads on here from regular guys like us and how they do things. Primal eating seems to be popular, though I don't use it. I've had very good results with intermittently fasting, and I can still drink beer without derailing things. Good luck and remember there's a huge support network right here.

I like the circuit that Laird outlines in his "Force of Nature" book....you can customize it to your abilities and time frame.  I'm planning to get back to the gym as usual in the winter time and will get back to this routine for sure
