strongest leash?
« on: September 02, 2011, 05:40:24 PM »
New to paddleboarding and have been surfing a PSH 10'6" wide arounder for about 9 month.  Today I snapped my leash while out surfing and had to do the long swim after my board.  :(

Recommendations on the strongest brand, model of leash?

Thanks in advance and have a great weekend!

Quick search shows this as the "worlds strongest leash"

But I thought that they were designed to break? Incase the pull is so strong and it keeps dragging you or twists your leg/ankle? I guess it would be better to always have the board to save yourself with, even with a twisted leg.

XM Power Clip, has a safety release loop should you get stuck.
It takes a quiver to do that.

I have the power clip coiled leash I use for racing.  It's awesome.  I especially like the quick release.for those beach springs at the end.  Does it come as a.straight leash for surfing too?  I should look, cause the coiled is awesome for race and downwinders.

I really like the CREATURE BIG WAVE leash.  Check out the photo.  The leash plug failed but the leash held.

Straight?  Yes, that's what I got.

They are all pretty much the same until you see this one.

Assuming that you have a situation that going to break something, I think I'd prefer the leash to break before the plug ripped off the board.  Cheaper to fix a leash.

But the  oceanearth leashes look solid combined with say dual plugs to spread the load, it could be the way.

This leash has been good for me so far, http://www.creatures.com.au/leash/outerreef10/11   Been through one winter season and on this last big swell here on Maui.  I'm going to get another one for this coming winter.  Rotating them out every winter keeps peace of mind for me.

great point Head-to be realistic-i will most likely ever be in giant surf and put a huge load on my leash here in Socal-the OE leash looks really good and it does look stronger-I use an OAM-its great and to be safe i look to replace it once a year-and to echo Heads point i would much rather the leash break than rip out a plug.

Probably goes without saying, but it's more important to make sure whatever you use is in good condition. Snapped my leash yesterday and did the long one armed swim of shame.  Thing was pretty ratty, should have replaced it long ago.  Kinda lucked out, there was exposed coral on the inside, but my board made it through unscathed.

the way i look at it leashes are just like anything else, it wears down over time and usage.  best bet is to replace them regularly depending on how much you use them.  I replace mine once a year.

I've been using a 7' Sticky Bumps 8mm leash (on a 9' board). I know the idea is for the leash and board to be roughly the same length, but I've had no problems with the shorter length. I have this fear of being "that guy", you know, the first one (locally) to decapitate or maim someone. I'll take my chances getting hit with my own board. I don't want anyone else to get hurt.
