Want to get a 12'6" Race Board. Bark Competitor?
« on: August 01, 2011, 11:54:45 PM »
Looking to get a 12'6" race board. Currently riding a 12'6" Tahoe Zephyr. I like the Tahoe but want to get a race specific 12'6". Would my 190 lb size be ok for a Bark Competitor? Any other suggestions?

I would REALLY consider the Fanatic Fly 12'6" Fast Stable in flatwater and even waves.

What sort of conditions do you anticipate racing in? Mostly flat water or surf / BOP style?

I've been using the Competitor for 6 months and I am the same weight.  Love it for everything.

I'll be using in all types of water from the ocean (west coast) to flat water (smooth an rough).

Great to hear. I'm currently up in Lake Oswego, Or and am renting a Dominator 14'. It's a great ride. I would love to rent a 12'6" Competitor but I can not find any rentals in the area.

Have you talked to Gorge Performance (GorgeBob's shop) in Portland?  He has several performance demo boards, but I'm not sure about a Competitor.

Yep. That's who I rented the Dominator from.

1medic--you could come to the Gorge Performance movie night Thursday evening and schmooze--there's a good chance you could find someone in the crowd who has a Competitor that they'd let you try out.

My guess is you'll find the Competitor to be a tad heavier, depending on construction, and about 5-10% slower.  Great board for it's length though.

Yep, I think greatdane is right: I've owned both the Comp and the Dom, and my recollection is that the Comp in standard construction was something like 4lbs heavier than the Dom (which are all pro-elite construction).

In flatwater and according to my GPS over various sessions, the Dom is around 6% faster than the Comp. Actually, this shows how good the Comp is, since I think that's about the same increase as you'd expect from the increase in waterline, yet the Dom is lighter and narrower. But paddlers with greater skill than me might show a greater advantage for the Dom. Also, I paddle in coastal waters where shorter boards can sometimes be faster in eg. cross-winds, and the Comp is also a tiny bit more stable - perhaps because of the weight. This can also help speed, especially on longer routes.

They are both excellent boards, and make going fast as easy as it can be.

I've had mine for about 4 months now and absolutely love this board. It's great in flat water, cuts through chop even rides smaller waves. I can only recommend it.

Thanks for all the input. I'm going to hold off on the 14'Dominator till the 2012's are out. I'm getting a used Competitor in the meantime.
