cracks (oh my god!) in the finbox
« on: July 26, 2011, 11:31:12 AM »
hi guys, while fooling around with some fins on my c4 board, i discovered  a small crack ant the  very end of my  middle finbox. panic! does it matter at all, can i leave it untouched? are there ways to find out, if it matters?
thanks, eddie

You are going to need to get that fixed. Not that big a deal. Just be sure to find a reputable repair shop that knows what they are doing.

First you are going to have to get the water that is most likely in your board - out.

That's why the windsurf industry went to one piece boxes, not the fins unlimited surf boxes that split at the box weld seam.

Replace it with a Chinook box. Bomb proof.

You might as well fill the box with water and see if it vanishes before you get it routed out. If you're lucky, the box will be set in green PVC foam and that will stop water penetration to the EPS foam.

Yup, the box is toast. With a little luck it didn't leak, but you need to fix that. You probably whacked a fin once or twice. Happens.

That was an issue on three of my C4 boards (11'6", 10'6", 10'SV).   Fortunately I had heard about it prior and fixed them before putting them in the water.   I think it may have something to do with their leash system (hole drilled from inside fin box through the deck.

hi guys, took the patient to my local surfstore. the  "doctor" scraped around a little bit and  found out, that the crack is not running deep enough to do any harm. relief...

Did they seal it or reinforce it in anyway?  My guess is you'll eventually be leaking there.  Be careful not to hit any rocks or run you fins to the shore.

Eddie, in your other post you mentioned that you hit a rock while paddling the river, that woud very likely be what caused the crack.  A crack in the finbox is bad enough, but if you hit hard enough you could actally tear the box out of the board.   I think your solution of installing a smaller fin will help a great deal.  Also, I would very seriously consider a breakaway fin screw as discussed in the other post.

hi guys, the boarddoctor said, that the "lines" are old and i did not cause them. i bought the board used. i put some  wax there, has  to be good enough so far. i am pretty shure, that the board is tight, i pushed it underwater  to see if any bubbles rise up. so far so good.

Next time you paddle flip board over take out the fin and dry it of really good clean out the wax. Sit the board in the sun and if water starts to bubble out you know you have a leak.
