Starboard PR Silver AST Deckpad
« on: June 04, 2011, 02:50:34 AM »
My Starboard Pocket Rocket Silver AST's Deckpad is very effective in the middle (4mm 3/4 DECK PAD square-groove traction EVA standing area) where I stand when I am paddling in parallel stance but in front and in the back (2mm EVA fore and aft of standing area) it is just flat and I already slipped a few times..

Should I just put wax on the pad or is there another way to make it less slippery?

As a newbie I can tell you my findings but don't take them to serious...
I have got another set of fins on the PR : Q-7Q1s  http://www.surffcs.com/en/products/fins/Quads/Q-7Q1s.aspx
I have never been on the old one and the only boards I can compare it with are the SB converse and the Angulo Surfa 9.0

The PR has a lot less glide compared to the Converse but is better suited for beach break conditions imo.
It is very nice for late takeoffs and very loose. The quad setup is very usefull when the waves break on a very shalow sandbank.

But the board I use the most is the Angulo Surfa 9.0, it is a lot more stable when it is choppy and also very loose.
But I force myself to use the PR as much as possible to improve my balance.

I was thinking about using coarse sandpaper on the slippery parts of the deck pad...

Any thoughts about that?

Sure. Why not? I'd go easy on it in a small section maybe just scuff it up by hand with 200 grit and try it out before wailing on the pad with 60 or coarser grit or a power sander.

I just got a new Starboard 8'10" Wardog widepoint in the silver AST. Love everything about it (review coming soon!)but totally agree on the pad. Slippery on the back where you need it to grip the most! Graphics/colors are also overdone. I'm gonna pull it off before too long I'm sure and get a better pad like an x-trak on there.

I agree.  It's so disappointing that they do that on a wave board.  Yes the middle section is awesome but on my PR I slipped countless times on the back 1/3.  Come on starboard, stop putting those lame slippery pads on!  I had to put some additional pieces on top of the existing pad for some good traction when doing cutbacks.

Similar problem on my Coreban Fusion - I hit it with some degreaser and sanded by hand with 80 grit using a block.  It's better - I'm going to try degreaser again - maybe a different brand.

I may be tempted to try the Monster Paint - DJ knows his stuff...

The early Mana's had grip that was a bit greasy and I've heard of people spraying the grip with Monster Paint and they said it worked great.. I don't know how long it lasted or if it had any effect on the grip material.. It might be worth contacting the Monster Paint people and asking them what they think about spraying it directly onto the deck grip.

Yesterday I slipped again with my back foot and now I really have to do something about  it.

I don't like wax and I can't get Monster Paint in the Netherlands so I guess I will have to try to sandpaper the slippery parts of the deck pad of my Pocket Rocket.

I just am still a bit hesitant , don't want to mess up my PR....

Did any of you already do this?
How did you do it? What grid? Did it help? And how does it look?

Take some traction pad and cut it into 2-3 inch triangles clean the existing pad very well and stick triangles right over it with about .5-1 inch between  them.  Sick traction, soft, removeable, no need to alter original pad...
