any good standing wave close to Calgary?
« on: May 29, 2011, 05:41:52 PM »
starting my season #5.
I think I am ready for the "safe" easy standing wave if such exists...
I have ULI fatass 9'3"

just dont want to be the first guy.
dont want to use leash
dont want to loose board
dont want to injur myself.

I need my fragile body for real surfing, wsrfng and skiing...

anybody? any ideas?

Have you been out on the Kananaskis river? I haven't been out there yet, but just learned that the guys/gals from Undercurrents surf a standing wave out there ... you'll need a leash & helmet though :)

I've also seen some people surf a little wave on the Bow, just steps West of the 10th street (walking) bridge, on the South side of the river.

You now know everything I do - hope this helps & let me know if you find anything more!!

The white water park replacing the weir (by the zoo) on the Bow River in Calgary is supposed to be ready for the public this year.  I'm not sure if there will be more features added or not, or if what's currently in place will create a good standing wave or not.

thanks for the video, robon, but it doesn't impress me... where is surfing? just going down with the current in white water? lets hope that may be it will be the wave...

kananaskis river... my understanding it is just surfing, no longer than 7' board
and this place by 10 th street... saw couple times from LRT, not sure I want to go there.

using leash in the whitewater...no never. I was in oahu, strong shorebreak, I fell, it was neck deep water. turned out my leash got caught in the corral, or rock on the bottom, next moment the wave comes, throuws me to the shore, and my board too, but on the different side of this rock... i thought i will die.

so no leash in the river with constant current.

For a river SUPing leash, check out the following post from Corran

http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=11574.0

It is set up like a kayaking tow rope with both a quick release waist belt and a very thin leash designed to break in a snag.

Runaway kayaks tend to fill up with water and slow down, making them easier to catch after you bail ...
