Hi,

As a long time outrigger canoe and surfski racer I am considering SUP racing and have been a bit confused by some of the race results and classes.  Many races show age group placings but neglect to specify board length and yet other races specify the opposite (board size results but no age groups).

So my question is... if one wants to enter age group races can that person choose any board length or are the age group results only for those on 12'6" boards?

I ask because I think a 14' board is better for my size (6'1"/195) but I still want to be able to compete/place against people my own age.

Any input is appreciated!

...Roger

At this point in time there is no over all sanctioning body for SUP races (thank goodness) so it is up to each individual race organizer to come up with classes - both board and age - that they think will best suit the paddlers that will attend their event.

Get in touch with people putting on races in your area and see what they have planned - then enter accordingly.

Most races at this point are "heavy on the FUN factor" and although they can get competitive it's generally a more social event.

Hi Roger,
Nothing really concrete.  Every race is different. I would say if you are in the 20 - 35 board classes will be separate.  But if you are competing in the master division (by the way sometimes this is 40 +, other times 50+, sometimes 46+ ) there most likely will be no board class.  Other times the master division will be limited to stock only... Some races change the distance depending on what board length you have so that also becomes an issue.  A 14 ft is a great compromise but is also a very competitive division.

Cheers, Jill
