mana vs starboard (nose and tail rocker)
« on: March 21, 2011, 11:25:01 AM »
Hi all. first of all I wish to say a big thank you to all in this forum. Been surfing for 36 yrs and I am as amped up about stand up as I was a life time ago about surfing after that first wave. The knowledge gained here was remarkable. One year ago I rode a 11' doyle, quickly went to a 10' mana, (primarily surfing ) love the mana, great board. surfs well, never pearls. Would like a little more of a surfboard. I am 6' 185 hooka a little small for New England waves. Maybe it is as simple as the 9' 5 mana, I like the looks of the coreban Icon and the sb drive. I like beach breaks so I like boards with good rocker. I think I need about 170-180 in volume. Thanks in advance for some recommendations

Go 9'0 Mana. You'll rip on it. The hottest of the Mana's and no problem for your size.

It's got everything you liked about the big Mana's. Rocker, scoop, plus the 9'0 is faster and lighter.

Out of the boards you mentioned, lately I have been borrowing my wife's Coreban Icon for my local beach break (about 3 hours N of you). Nice nose rocker, but a decent paddler, hard to pearl. Lot of fun even in crappy waves for me @ 6'3" 220 very responsive, surfs much shorter for me than its 10' length. 162 liters floats me easily.

Another suggestion would be the new Starboard 8'10" Wide point. I have the 10'5" wide point as my go-to board and just love it.

I must EMPHATICALLY agree with DW. Mana 9Ft absolutely rips in beach breaks You will LOVE it

The SB Drive is a fast down the line board (nose rides great) but NOT a rail to rail ripper like the Mana 9FT

well can't really compare it to many boards, but the 9'0'' mana works for a lot of different conditions....I've had my wifes out in ankle snappers, and in 14ft ultra choppy waves...the board works very well.

I must say though, for beach breaks, you could easily also get with the 9'0'' hokua...I'm the same weight as you and the board goes early, you can go to the nose, and it is super light for turning on those waves.

Just as a general comment...I'm surprised, but the development lately is pretty significant in the distribution of the volume, so I've been able to go a lot down in volume..way further than I ever thought before.
