Wind Power
« on: August 05, 2007, 05:48:42 AM »
So much environmental activity seems to offer little in the way of feel-good tangible results.  You know it's helping, but you really cannot see it.  Well, along comes modern wind power.  Maui erected a small grouping of turbines http://www.heco.com/vcmcontent/Corporate%20Communications/Consumer%20Lines/0607_meco.pdf on the West side of the Isthmus and it was producing almost 10% of our energy in it's first month.  This upcoming year, a second farm will go up in Ulupalukua that when complete will bring us up to 20%.  4 other wind projects are proposed, that could bring Maui to over 50% !!!

That is without Solar, without wave energy, etc.

On the topic of wave energy capture check out these guys http://www.oceanpowertechnologies.com/tech.htm#  which have been succesfully used here in HI.

Even so, the state goal is only a 20% reduction in conventional energy inependence by 2020.  C'mon...C'mon

Rand - made my night with the nantucket wind clip.  I was on Nantucket this summer with the family for a week and I have never seen so much pink in my life.  Pink shorts, Pink hats, pink Pink Pink  in fact we were a dinner one night a we met a family of five all wearing something pink.  Preppy breeding ground.

It is an amazing island, make the trip but best case make it during the fall without the crowds.

The backside of Nantucket has amazing downwinder possibilities and yes just like the clip=  tons of wind.  I heard that there were two stand up paddle boarder on the island, surfing mainly over at a place called cisco.

The Nantucket thing bothers me. If it was anyplace else Teddy Kennedy and his friends would be all for it. But it's in there backyards. Personally, I think it's the perfect place to put it. we should have them dotting the shoreline. especially near to concentrated points of use.

I'm heading over to Nantucket for a weekend...late September. I'll be scoping out places for next year. I won't be close to ready for that this year.

Love Nantucket - bring your wallet.

Bringing a board over would me a major hassle without a car.

When I was there, the wind was whipping every afternoon from the west cross island to north east.

Dionis Beach looked like a perfect downwinder run back to the main harbor.  you could go out further west to get more mileage.  This was 4 miles outside of the harbor area.  The water is very flat but very windy.

I'll be hitting both the vineyard and nantucket this fall so it will be hit hard.....the wallet I mean.

I was thinking that the vineyard would be a relatively easy paddle for someone with skills (not me) . You could leave from Falmouth beach, a little over 3 miles to the West Chop. You could probably even hitch a ride on a few cabin cruisers wakes. It would be an even easier sail.

I'm going to take a look at Nauset later this fall.

I've spent a few warm early October days fishing there. The water was still warm. I ended up taking off waders and putting on shorts and surf casting from rib deep water. It was a long time ago but I remember some nice long rollers coming in at an angle to the beach. Be a great place to do a long downwind run.
