weight of starboard 10.5 widepoint
« on: February 22, 2011, 12:29:13 AM »
hi.just recieved my wp in tasmania and was a little suprised on the weight. apart from dragging it to the beach im happy with its performance and the ast grey grip is great under my feet.my thoughts are its a better overall board than the drive and whopper.the volume is there but when your getting busy its feels shorter with its pulled in nose.any thoughts from you in usa............

I have the 10'5" WP in the carbon construction which weighs just N of 20 lbs (on the bathroom scale, fwiw). Coming off big boards yes, I agree with you my WP responds and turns almost like a 9' board for me ...... and with the length I get that extra glide that a 9' board does not have.

I have the 10'5" widepoint in AST grey.  I weighed it (also on a bathroom scale) and it was just over 28 lbs. with fins and leash.  It's several pounds lighter than my other board (Starboard 12'6 cruiser) so it feels light to me, but I bet the carbon feels like a different board.  I demoed the whopper and liked it too, but like the widepoint better - it is very stable, I like how the nose punches thru and over incoming waves/whitewater, and it turns very well for a 10'+ board.

How stable is it compared to a whopper?
Overall, how do these 2 boards compare, in small surf (up to waist high)
With it's pulled in nose and pronounced rocker, is it built more for bigger/beefier surf compared to the whopper?

thanks
Mike

HI.the 10.5wp is more stable than the whopper, as for in the waves the wp gets through the waves better with its pulled in nose.the wp has better glide and can handle steep fast peelers as well.ive rode both and went for the wp. im 105kg and 6ft plus.ive rode the wp from ankle to overhead and its the best board ive had. hope this helps...

My WP holds onto the wave tighter turn to turn and is far more responsive than my Whopper. Between waves maneuvering or just paddling around it is as stable if not more so than my Whopper.

I agree w/ Ake G and spenny.  I especially find the WP more stable than the whopper in situations where I lose my balance a bit - maybe after kicking out of a wave and I start to tip.  On the whopper I would tip, on the WP I seem to be able to stand on it, even burying one rail pretty deep, it still feels stable, and I can recover.

Had mine out in shin high the other day (noone else out - too small I guess) and had a great time catching little waves, doing a little longboard style cross-stepping.  Took it out this morning in shoulder high - screaming down the face, laying down sharp bottom turns, very responsive.

BTW, I'm 6 ft. 225 lb. and have only been standup surfing (never surfed before) for abut 9 months. Pretty impressive that an old, fat, non-surfer can tear up shoulder high waves- gotta give a lot of credit to the equipment.   ;D

Wow. Impressive. So the WP is more stable and responsive than the whopper!?!
Lastly, what about glide?  I know neither are touring/race boards, but which has more glide?
The narrower width and pulled in nose of the WP seems like it would give it better glide, but it's pronounced rocker goes against it's ability to glide--what's your real life experience comparing the WP vs Whopper?

The 32" wide x 10'5" WP has MUCH better glide than the 34" x 10' Whopper. Faster on and much, much easier chasing down a wave. The narrow pointed nose of the WP and 5 extra inches contributes, 2 different boards.

Try them both! The places you surf , your size/ surfing style/ability may suit one board better than the other. The Whopper was my first "surfing specific" board. At 220 lbs I feel I'm almost too light to really get the most out of the Whopper, to sink a rail to turn sharply etc...I don't think it's coincidental that since getting the WP my surfing has improved.

You can loosen the 10'5" Wide Point up even more by playing with fins...I use several combos...
5" all around...6.5" with 4" sidebiters...used this combo 2 weeks ago on my carbon 10'5" WP at a draining offshore reef break...worked really well...and, for bigger riders or riders wanting more positive feel, use the 6.5" with 5" sidebiters...etc...
