No such thing as a paddling "off season" out here.  Truly blessed to be able to go paddle whenever I want and not have to worry about putting on a wetsuit or anything. Grab the board and its a 5 minute drive to the beach.

lucky enough to live in sw florida, so pretty much paddle all the time.  im from socal so i miss the surf but to make up for that i just fly fish, run in the sand, bike occasionally, and fly rc planes into the ground sometimes.

I have practiced Tai Chi for many yrs.  It can be done most anywhere and requires no special equipment.  Benefits include a strong core, good balance, & flexibility.  I believe its flowing movement fits nicely with paddling & surfing.  And, it is a great martial art.

When not paddling, i head for the trail to my other great passion: single speed mountain biking !
Also, i perform my very own bodyweight exercise routine. It includes a sampler of basic gymnastics movements including balance work, horizontal and parallel bar movements, explosive movements, yoga poses and even a tiny bit of olympic style lifting. Just to keep the body busy and fit !

In the winter, I ski downhill and back country up in the mountains, and over the past few years have really gotten into skinny skiing out my back door. For those that have not tried it and live near snowy terrain, skinny skiing (xc-skiing on slightly wider full edge skis and lightweight boots) is very similar to distance paddling- you've got to try it! It gives you that constant zen-like feeling and killer cardio workout.
My house abuts a 10+ mile series of trails, so I get out on them with my mountain bike, skinny skis, hiking boots, dog, etc.  I also ride a cyclecross bike on occasion.
I still have my 2 longboards, but haven't used them much in the past year or so.
I hit the gym for cardio 5-6 days a week before work, plus standard pullups, situps, pushups routine and also try to get a 30 min walk in at lunch around campus.
I also have 2 acres of land that needs weekly maintenance when there's no snow, so that keeps my busy. And this winter I really go into shoveling off my roof! We had record snowfall here in southern NH, and at one point my roof had 4+ feet of snow. That was a workout getting it all off!

For those of us that have frozen lakes in the winter (so no paddling), but lots of snow I think x-country skiing is great cross training (both classic and skating).  X-country skiing is great for cardio, but also works the core and upper body (especially when double  poling).  I especially think that the balance required for each sport is complimentary.  When classic skiing in set tracks the feet are about 12" apart and one has to balance while going up and down hills and around corners.  According to my GPS watch I sometimes reach speeds of 25+ mph while negotiating terrain - so constant adjustments for balance.

A friend of mine was a serious marathon canoe paddler in his younger years and he said one of the perennial champs (from Canada) did nothing but cross-country ski in the winter.  I'm hoping it will work for me in the same ways whem it comes to flat water SUPing.
