17 Naish Glide replacement fin ?? Where can I get one ??
« on: February 12, 2011, 10:09:20 AM »
I bought a Naish 17 glide last year and re did the steering a few months ago. I have been training on it in all conditions lately. I LOVE This board. However I was checking out the rudder and shaft the other day and it appeared crooked (leaning to the left of center. So I put a square on it and it is definetly OFF. It was not bent or damaged from abuse. The shaft is square it appears that the shaft was just put in a little crooked when making the rudder.

I have called Naish here on Oahu and incredibly they do not sell ANY parts for the rudder system. The only thing they can order is the cables ??  So if my board has any parts failure like my rudder I'm screwed ??

They are checking Maui Naish to see if they have a rudder to send here.

My question is does anyone know where I can get spare parts for the Naish steering system ???

You would think if they sell a 2,600 dollar board they would stock parts for it or at least be able to oder some,  but this does not appear to be the case. CRAZY !! what kind of customer service is that ??

If anyone knows where I can get an after market part (LIke rudder) for the Naish 17 please let me know.

Maybe a SIC rudder would fit. I'll bet SIC knows the answer to that question.

Just bend it back straight.. The rudder shaft is a pretty soft stainless steel and bends very easy and having the shaft bend is better than doing damage to the board if you hit something.. There's a guy here in Oz that make rudders for the DC boards and he can make a replacement rudder to fit the Naish.. The shafts are the same but they are longer on the Naish.. about 140mm vs 100mm for the DC boards.. I'm guessing the SIC rudders would fit but their shafts might not be long enough.. Most of the Naish shafts are a tiny bit off with the square but it's no big deal because of the adjustment in the lines.. I'll post some more info and pictures soon.

Thanks Guys for the Info !!!

I have a SIC F-16 V2 and the rudder shaft is a Bit to short as DJ said it would be. I am currently trying to get a hold of Mark at SIC to see if they can make me a rudder for the Naish.  Hope fully I can get a replacement from Naish as this is clearly a Manufacturing defect.

Currently the shaft is straight DJ however it is just molded into the rudder at a slight off center angle. If I bend it to the proper angle then the shaft will be bent, I don't know if that will be a problem. I would have to bend it Exactly at the point the shaft meets the rudder which might be a bit tricky. I hear there is a guy who specializes in straightening shafts out here on oahu but I have not found his info yet.

I will try and contact the guys in Washington.

DJ If I can get a rudder from your friend I would like to buy an extra rudder just to have as a backup. Do any of you have back up rudders for your boards. If not you should seriously think about getting one cause if you hit the reef and bend it you will be out of commission until you get another or have it fixed.

Thanks for the help any more input will be appreciated.

You can straighten it yourself. But before I tell you how, a question--is it affecting performance? A little bit of tweak from vertical will probably have no effect. That said, here's how to straighten the shaft. clamp the rudder in a vise between two pieces of wood that come flush to the top of the rudder. Slip a piece of tubing over the shaft so all the bending will happen right at the rudder. Apply a little firm pressure in the direction you want to bend. Check and repeat as necessary.

The shaft is stainless steel and doesn't take much force to bend. I've bent mine all over the place. You don't have to get it perfect for the rudder to work just fine, a little tweak doesn't hurt a thing.

The Aussie distibuters (Windginuity) have a few spare rudders for the 17' Glide and I'm sure if you contacted them they'd send you one.. ask for Aidan.

I'm not sure what you mean by not quite straight.. Are you talking about the T plate that sits on the square at the end of the rudder shaft not being at 90 deg when the rudder is straight.. If so they are ofeten an little out and it's no big deal because of the cable adjustment.

If the rudder is bent sideways or forward or back just bend it back straight while it's in the board.. I have and it's pretty easy to do because the s/s shafts are pretty soft.

I am thinking of doing what DC does with his rudders and I'll take some pictures if I do.

Craig, the guy that specializes in fixing ruddered boards on sand island bends the rudder shaft exactly like PonoBill described and it works fine, no need to buy a new rudder.  I have also had a rudder custom made by BC fins on the North Shore, he makes beautiful rudders and prone racing fins.

;D .. The black DC fin that pic looks like it could be backwards.. but it's not.

I've been trying to get a rudder like the DC one to try in my Glide because I think the Glide rudder could be slightly bigger.

Was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a fin for my Naish 17 glide that is weedless. I imagine I would have to get it custom made. I have been waiting for  over a month now to locate rudder parts for my Naish. I took a spill and my foot hit the lever and broke the fiber glass rod that keeps it straight. Also cracked the socket that it screws to. Big bummer that no one, including Naish in California, has any parts to for it. It isn't like it just got released.  Don't understand why company is so un prepared. I can't be the only one who has needed parts. Love the board. I have a 14 glide also. Have had nothing but good things to say about Naish until recent events!any help would be great. Thanks everyone
