Would you be ok with 14" race as your only board?
« on: February 06, 2011, 04:49:06 PM »
I currently own a 12'1 Laird and a 14' Starboard Race (new).  Thinking about maybe selling one of them to help fund one of my other (sporting) addictions.  Remember that I am not much of a surfer type and I am on the west coast of FL where we don't really get much surf anyway.  I understand that some of you multi board guys may not relate to the idea of only one board.  But if you were in my shoes what do you think you would do?  I have a lot of sporting interests and like it that way as it keeps it fresh for me.  I tend to not like focusing on one thing all the time.

You've got a couple of different questions there and it looks like you are already pulling the trigger on putting that Laird in the classified.  If your question is the title, 14 as the only race board, then my answer is yes, no question.  But if the question is, if I could only own one board I might look a little closer toward that Laird.  I think if you own one board it ought to serve well for about 85% of your paddling.  But if that's distance, cruising and race than your14 is just fine.

For me, the 700 or so you might get for that Laird isn't worth unloading it...it fills a niche.

No, but that's just me. If I were going to have one board it would be a surfy downwinder board, like a 12'2 Starboard, Ku Nalu, or even a 12'6 starboard. Most 14' race boards don't surf well and are OK for downwinders. I haven't spent any time on the newer Lairds, but I suspect it's more of an all-around board than a 14' race board. Still, it makes sense to have a board that suits what you do the most.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I'd keep the Pin.  Its a fun, fast & stable board.   The Laird is big & stable...not as fun to paddle.  Good luck getting a good price On it used though.  The el cheap boards are killing the used market.  I've decided to keep them vs giving them away.

ya i agree, id keep the laird because even if there is surf once in a while it will still surf a 100 times better then the race board. and if u ever go across state u got a sweet board to ride in bigger waves. i have a 10'6 c4  i just cant get ride of. it rides and paddles to nice plus its not worth the $600 id get for it. plus any one i know thats wants to try sup rides that and loves it.

I have the Starboard 14' as part of my 5 board quiver but it is definitely the last one I'd want to sell. Oddly enough, it's not my go-to board for flat water or racing or surf but it is definitely the best all rounder and the best dw board I own.

Ok, now you've got me curious.  Which one of the five is the go to?  Thanks for your response to my op.  Decisions, decisions....

I race the K15 and the New, and either of those would be my go-to for flat water. I have a Pin, which is just a great board but I never seem to use any more for whatever reason. I've just picked up a Tiki for the surf, which is quite ambitious if you'd ever seen me surf. But like Lobes says, the Surf Race 14' is the one to keep for DW and therefore, the best one board quiver for me. A lot of Naish people would say the 14' Glide.
