SUP rental Maui Kaanapali / Lahaina
« on: February 06, 2011, 07:29:36 AM »
I'm going to Maui for the first time this week.  Anyone have board rental suggestions for Kaanapali / Lahaina area?

I searched the ZONE forum, but didn't find any recent info.

I'd like to rent 2-4 boards and paddles for several days or a week.  Mostly for cruising, more than surfing, something stable.

Is there a SUP school that could accommodate a group of 10 or more for a lesson, in the same area?

(I'm also looking for a condo in the same area, that sleeps 4 for 4-5 days if anyone happens to have a recommendation)

I've searched for all this, but I'm looking for anyone who can help me with recommendations.

Thanks a million!

Do your board rental before you leave the airport area, all the big shops are in Kahalui. Hawaiian Island Surf and Sail, High Tec, Naish, Second wind all rent SUPs. HISS has the most but they are mostly their own design, if you want to try other boards High Tec has the broadest range, and of course if you want a Naish, then Naish is the place to go.

Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

For lesson, I don't know. Used to be that Sol Morey gave lessons, and he's great, but I haven't seen him in a long time.

Pono Bill, thanks for the insight.  We get in late, so I'll have to wait until the next day, and drive back over  to Kahalui.  I have some friends in Wailuku, so I'll probably be over there a few times in the course of the week.

I'll probably take my inflatable Sevylor just to have a board with me.

For three days I'll be a part of a group, and there will be a bunch of newbies that will want to try SUP.

I would love a couple of (slightly) more advanced lessons, too.

Just some follow-up:

I rented a board from the Royal Surf Academy in Lahaina.  Selection was limited, but they were very cool.  I rented a Naish Nalu 11'6"for a day and ended up extending for a week, without any problems.

Maui Wave Riders is there as well, they were closed on Sunday when I went looking for a board.

Hey guys, my wife and I are coming over to Oahu for a week (Turtle Bay), then Maui for 2 weeks (Kaanapali & Kihei) starting mid May. Aiming to hire SUP for surfing (riding 9'3 Naish & 8'5 Coreban Nitro here in Oz). Any recommendations on what board would be right for North Shore Oahu & South Shore Maui in May? Thanks for the info.

Also, what SUP friendly car do you recommend I should hire? Here when travelling in Australia, it's usually a big stationwagon that I can leave the SUP locked in overnight. Is that too risky in Hawaii?

you are better off taking your boards indoors at night.
As for waves, the north shore of oahu should be very flat unless there is an off season swell from the Arctic circle.  The south side of the islands get waves in the summer.
Have fun!

Rented a 9' Kazuma from Royal Hawaiian Surf, Prison Street, Lahiana. A beautiful board that surfed as good as it looked. Had a good time meeting The Cove Park Braddahs, and Mana and Coco the surfing dogs. Oh yeah, got waves on North & South Shores of Oahu. Thanks to Matt Chong, Eric Arakawa and Tony Moniz for their aloha.
