Source for wide S-2 fiberglass cloth
« on: March 07, 2008, 05:28:43 PM »
I'm having a hard time finding wider widths of S-2 fiberglass cloth to laminate my HWS SUP.  Ideally, I need at least 34" wide, and prefer 3.6 to 4.4 oz S glass.  Anybody have a source?  I've already tried Fiberglass Hawaii, Fiberglass Supply, US Composites, Foam EZ and others.  Any pro builders out there have a supply that they'd be willing to resell to a back yard builder in small quantities (8-15 yards)?

Maybe Thayercraft or Raka has some.  If its a tight weave it will be hard to wrap rails and deal with contours.  S-2 glass will usually not be as clear as E glass over wood.  S glass usually leaves a slight weave shadow.

Just to close the loop on this topic, 4 oz. S-2 fiberglass cloth is simply not available in widths beyond 30".  I decided to go with 30" S-2 on top, and wider E glass on the bottom, with plenty of rail overlap.  Since this is a hollow wood SUP, single layer lamination is plenty, with the glass providing more water proofing than anything else.  I was hoping for S-2 for paddle ding resistance, but have been convinced by many that I'll be just fine with an S-2/E combo.  I did buy almost all of my laminating supplies from Fiberglass Supply.  They are a good outfit, with low prices, fast shipping and great customer service.  Buy stuff from them, and you will not be disappointed.
