That was pretty killer, actually... Loved it when he climbs the wave for a cut-back... Slick!           Later,          JD

I don't wanna be a hater but the guy holding the paddle while the motor "paddled" him in was hilarious. Standup...um.. Motorboarding?

I also agree with the paddle out being a big part of the experience in surf and a good limiter for safety. I genuinely love paddling a board through waves.

However, it's an awesome thing when viewed as an aid to disabled surfers and the handicapped. The thought that a Vet could surf with one arm or a surfer who has shoulder problems could still surf makes me almost forgive all the kooks who'll just use one to be lazy.

I have to agree. They can't call it Stand-Up PADDLE-Boarding; can they?   Later,    JD

Maybe the rider should try and fool those around him into thinking he is just paddling really fast!  Perhaps they should give it to Liard and see what uses he can find for it. I am sure he would come up with something innovative.

The shortboarders have always given the longboarders a rough time. Now the longboarders are heckling the SUPers. Perhaps the wave ski will remove the bulls-eye on our backs and give the SUP surfers an outlet to focus our frustration(s) on!

Haha-who wants to talk about bad etiquette?

One of two things is happening in the videos. Either the surfers that were used to make the video suck or the motorized board makes you surf bad. I'm leaning more towards the motorized board makes you surf bad.

When I was a kid growing up in Long Beach Ca. back in the early 80's  U-Haul used to rent jet boards.  They were the larger bulky ones with the jet ski components.  They were fun in the bay.

All this "stay out" (whether SUP vs Prone or manual vs motor) stuff is bringing back my old Alaska days in the back country.

First the backcountry skiiers yelled at the new snowboarders to stay off their runs.  Then once they figured the snowboarders were here to stay both groups yelled at the snow machines to stop high-marking their runs.  Then the heli-ski operation moved into town and everyone yelled at them to stay off of their runs, so they went and got their own better runs.  Then they all yelled at the new fitness snowshoers to stop marking up the runs........................Jesus!

After Alaska and Hawaii my move to the Texas coast is starting to look good.  400 miles of crap beach break and a bunch of guys that can't take the water when it gets below 60 degrees.  Lovin the elbow room.

It's sounding pretty crowded out there!

I thought it was cool ! I would not mind trying it.. :)

I did surf short boards on my younger days (5”10 to 6’2”).. Then after many years away from the waves, I tried to go back on the water, but this time on long boards (9’ and up).. but had to stop due to an hernia that would bother me being on a prone position after 30 mins.
Then in 2008 I saw for the first time SUP in Hawaii and I was able to be back in the waves again.

Although I do understand (and agree with some) the arguments about the benefits, and reasons, etc.. for paddling out..I have to tell you what I say to prone surfers when they try to bitch about the paddle and SUP:
We “all” have the same objective when we are out there "surfing"… it is to catch a wave and Stand UP !
How you catch a wave, what kind of board you use, etc… it is your personal choice .. or sometimes personal "limitations" !
What about those “surf skin gloves” .. Would that be “cheating too” !?   ???

Any way …You can be a wave hog even on a short board if you have the skills, knowledge of the break, endurance and strength.
So the kind of board you ride is not the issue… it is your Attitude towards the sport and others.

It would be interesting to see what will be the arguments the prone surfers would now use to bitch about something like this on the line up !  ;D

Cheers...

riding these boards under power has a tendency to bring on asymmetric fatigue to the lower back and (rearward) thigh and calf muscles. this is primarily due to the effort it takes to counter the tendency of the rider to fall backward as the board tries to shoot forward from underfoot.

...just because a person doesn't believe certain things should exist shouldn't stop them from exploring the possibilities.

heheheh... not that i'd ever publicly admit to such an aberration.

Cape Cod will remain pure, as we have MUNG.

Mung will take care of those impeller blades for sure.

Might be fun to have one though, just to shoot water at your mates on a helicopter/pivot.

Maybe the rpm frequency will attract the Landlord....self-regulation....or peeps will doze off due to the nice humming buzz, and wake up in the pelagic zone ....i would def take a nap on one.

what happens when you duck dive?  do you just keep going down?
what about when your dreadlocks get caught inside the thing?

I have sup-shame sometimes......if this goes big, i will be cured

Can't we all just get a long ? (board)?   Seriously....everyone,.... a 9' Bic
One board/one world  ....the Volksboard

Reserve this for Brittany, and our vets who lost a limb.
Too many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps

Nice looking rig, though the motor looks old school. You'd want something more like this bad boy:

Fifteen kilowatts--about 18 horsepower if you played your cards right.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.
