Glide owners, help me please.
« on: January 07, 2011, 06:31:10 AM »
Glide owners, please help a fellow zoner.

If your 14 ft Glide has a mast insert, please measure and tell me how far from the tail it is located. I want to install a mast insert on my board and need to know where to put it.

Thanks  ;D

Mine's the new one without it..  :-\ .. I did a down-winder on mine yesterday and no one there was on the older model so I couldn't measure it for you.. but a mate is coming on our DW'er today and he has the older model so I'll measure it for you.. Gotta go it's only 8am here.. and almost 30 deg C (86F) already.. and the hot wind is gusting to about 30 knots ..  ;D .. yeah I've got a grin from ear to ear..  :D

Dwight -

I climbed up my board rack and measured the distance at 84.5" from the middle of the insert to the trailing edge of the tail

I dropped a small round file into the mast insert and taped it from there

I'll pull it out of the rack and measure it again tomorrow having someone hold the tape just to make sure.

Where are you getting the screw in type plug from (or are you using a conventional track)?

I was going to guess it was at the mid-point of the rocker. It sounds like that is exactly where it is.

I'm using a 2 bolt Chinook base attached using 1/4-20 screws into kiteboard inserts from Fiberglasssupply.com

I decided not to install a full box because of weight.

It was a last minute decision to throw the sail on it. I used some supplus carbon I got cheap of unknown weight. Turns out it was 10oz carbon, so my board came out 28 lbs instead of 22 lbs. Oops. That means this board is indestructible, so its getting a sail added. If I end up loving sailing it, I'll keep it for downwind and sailing. If the sailing part gets old too fast, I'll build another with 6oz and get my weight at 22 lbs. Living across the street from the ocean, there are so many days I think this board could be fun to cruise around with a sail. It's good for the soul  ;D

BTW, the wind at my house is slightly side off shore all summer, so kites don't work in front of my house. I have to drive to kite  >:(

I bet it'll be great. I'll probably put one in mine when I get back to Hood River

I was going to tell you to stick it right in the middle since that's what GP told me, but you asked a specific question. Even though GP has a lot of experience I thought a little further forward might be nice on my JL 11'7", so I had a long track installed with the back of the track at the midpoint. After much experimenting the base is always stuffed firm to the back. Of course different boards could act differently, but I suspect the midpoint gives a good balance of thrust. The tail rocker in SUPs makes the boards pick the nose way up at speed no matter what.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I finally got to check that measurment that you wanted and I got 85" from the tail.. and 81" from the nose.

So.. 85 + 81 = 166 ... so the 14' Glide is really 13' 10" ... ??? .. maybe it shunk..  ;D
