That makes so much sense. Well I guess I’ll be getting up early this weekend. I’ll be there Sat,Sun,Mon. Trying out a new wing.

What’s the deal with parking?  Have they decreased the amount of spaces available?  I’m used to dealing with the summer crowd, but 3am is crazy.

Foil SUP / Heading to San O this weekend. Anything I should know?

I haven't been there since right before they closed the beaches back in March/April.  Is it business as usual down there or is there something I need to know about parking, social distancing, etc?

Foil SUP / Covid 19: Now what?
« on: April 01, 2020, 04:40:50 PM »
You know its bad when an Arizona boy is complaining that he can't surf.  I almost drove out to SoCal on Friday, but after talking to some friends, I decided that was a bad idea.  So with everyone essentially locked down, how are you filling the time?  I got a new wing for wing foiling but I lack the essential ingredient of "wind."  Hopefully that will change this month as it warms up.  Other than that I've been mountain bike riding and skateboarding.  If you have any creative ideas, I'm all ears.

Stay safe

OOOOHHHHH Man, you're killing me.  I love that break and haven't been able to get there for a few months.  I'm so jealous.  I was down south last weekend and caught the swell.  Super fun walls at San O.  I tried to surf PB Point and got my ass kicked by the relentless barrage of 6-9 foot waves.  I managed to catch a few big ones but then would get caught inside and have to battle my way back out.  After an hour I was cooked.  Thanks for sharing and reminding me I need to get back up there.

Foil SUP / Re: SUP foil spot in Santa Cruz?
« on: November 19, 2019, 11:20:02 AM »
I'm going to take a slightly different position and say that the answer to your question is - no!  I love SC and visit there often (my wife works there) but I can't say there are any good spots to learn to foil.  If you already know how to foil, then SC can be pretty fun.  In my opinion the best use of your time would be to get behind a boat and get used to flying.  After that, drive down to San-O and spend the weekend down there learning the basics.  Once you have the basics down and you can fly under control, then check out Manresa on a mellow day with the perfect tide (tricky) or drive up to Davenport on a mellow day with the perfect conditions (super tricky). Most of the spots in town either have too many people or kelp issues.  If you're thinking about Cowells - STOP! Just don't go there until you've got 6-12 months of flying time logged.  Its the best spot in SC and we don't want to lose it.  So yeah, SC is very tricky to say the least.  My buddy from Fresno would rather drive 6 hours to San O than 2.5 hours to Santa Cruz,  because the foiling is so much better down south.

If I were you I would ignore my advise, because when I get excited about something I just have to try it - now.  But I'll bet you lunch that after a few attempts in SC, my advice will start to make more sense.

Good Luck.

Beasho,

How long does it take you to get used to the longer board?  I recently dusted off my starboard Hypernut 8-0 because it was big out and the first 3-4 waves felt crazy weird.  I had to relearn where to put my foot, how to turn without touching the water, and when to shift my feet just before takeoff.  I'm sure if I swapped out more often it would be easier, but its getting harder and harder to find days that I can't handle on the 6-0 Kalama.  That said, I'm not in HMB and not dealing with the energy you have up there.

Cheers

I haven't lost my board but I've run out of wind a few times.  In AZ we don't have consistent wind, it's gustier.  Luckily each time it happened, I had my paddle strapped to the wing.  Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to get anywhere pulling a wing in the water, so I've had to deflate it, pull the wing up onto the board, and then paddle in.  The ability to self-rescue, regardless of the reason, is a skill everyone getting into water sports should learn.

Cowboy: You’re getting jaded bro. Might be time to leave Hollywood. I doubt my video title is the kind of click bait that gets teenage girls to buy lip gloss.  But what do I know?  Don’t forget to stomp that like button and if you like what you see, hit subscribe.  ;D

Beasho:  You’re surfing big ass waves up there in HMB. Most of the boys at San-O are rocking track systems. So they can’t be all bad can they?

I've been wanting to add a few inches to my ... um... mast.  I also want to try some of the different positions that you can get with a plate system.  Last week I had a nice chat with the owner of Foil Mount and I decided to try the 3.0 Carbon mount on my Kalama.  I figured the worst-case scenario would be I have to rip the thing off and install a track system.  Either way, we're talking major surgery.  Long story short, my beautiful wife filmed me installing the adapter so you can see how easy it is.  I have no idea if this will work, and I'm not suggesting anyone buy one.  I'm just a customer like you but with some video editing skills.  LOL.  I'm heading to the coast on Saturday to try it out.  I'll film that as well.  Let me know if you find these videos helpful.  I have fun making them.

Robert,

Thanks for another very informative video.  I'm sure it took a lot of effort to shoot and edit.  Is there a Goldilocks mast length that you think is ideal?   26" is getting harder and harder to use as my ability improves.

Foil SUP / Help planning a trip
« on: August 26, 2019, 02:09:23 PM »
My buddy and I go on a surf trip every year.  For the past couple years we've gone to Tamarindo Costa Rica.  This year we want to try someplace new where the foiling is good.  I would like to get some recommendations.  It can be anywhere in the world, but we're looking for good foiling spots.  Some ideas we are tossing around are Maui (we've both been) or Fiji (neither of us has been).  I look forward to your input.

The river mouth in Tamarindo is really fun at medium to high tide.  Nosara also has a really great spot with long rides but its a 2-hour drive from Tamarindo.  I'm editing some video of my trip there.  Sorry, it's not ready yet, but it'll have a lot of good info on the area.  Look up Nico at the Beach club in Tamarindo.  He's the man and is the only guide I'll use because he's a foil sup guy.

Good luck.  Call me if you need more details.

Carbon or aluminum?

I’ve owned a ton of foils. They keep getting better each year. Right now, Neil Pryde is my favorite. They were co-designed by F4 foils, in case you’re wondering how they pulled off such good wings. The mast is super stiff too.
