SUP General / Tomahawk Ad Banned From Standup Journal
« on: June 17, 2009, 04:55:10 PM »
We sent Clay our ad concept for the upcoming issue of the SUP Journal, and it got shot down.  Clay was a great sport, but felt it could get both of us in hot water.  I thought it was funny as hell.  The text was as follows:

"Tomahawk would like to thank Wave Hog Hawaii for making this ad space available.  Although we are a little disappointed that they didn't like our boards enough to copy their designs, we hope our latest designs will be worthy of such shenanigans."

I thought the Zoners would get a laugh out of that ad.  Clay thought it was funny but, we understand him not wanting to stir the pot.

Whitewater and River SUP / Surfing a standing river wave
« on: May 26, 2009, 02:33:56 PM »
This is KB from Missoula MT.  He owns a kayak shop up there and is way into SUP.  He sent me these shots of him surfing on Brennan's wave.  Pretty cool stuff.  Brennan's is fun, but Glenwood Springs in CO is what it's all about.  The contest this weekend should be memorable to say the least.

The Shape Shack / Grant Washburn 11-10 ready for production
« on: May 24, 2009, 09:02:15 PM »
We just shipped this to our factory and expect to have it in stores in July.  It was shaped by Matt Ambrose and he did an amazing job.  The dimensions are 11'-10 1/2" long, 30" wide, 4 7/8" thick.  It's big, but it also goes big.

Whitewater and River SUP / More SUP on the Kings River
« on: May 14, 2009, 08:07:19 PM »
I wish I had some better shots.  It was late in the day and we were racing to get back to the truck.  I had a great day on the river.  I'm starting to feel more comfortable moving around on the water.  I was catching little river waves as I traveled down the river, and my ability to catch eddies is improving.

Enjoy the pictures

SUP General / SUP Expectations
« on: May 12, 2009, 11:12:33 AM »
With all of the talk lately on warranty issues and issues with construction, I want to ask you some questions:  What are your expectations of a SUP surfboard in terms of quality and construction?  Are heal dents something that should be warranted with a new board?  Do cracks in the deck or rails warrant a total board replacement?  Where is the line drawn between abuse and faulty construction, and how does one prove which is which?  Are you willing to pay much more for a bullet proof board, or would you rather have a lower price and an expectable amount of wear?

As a manufacturer, that does read these posts, I want to know what your expectations are, so that I can better meet them.  Unless you are making your boards out of plastic, there are going to be issues.  In your opinion, what is considered expectable wear and tear?   Let me and the other SUP manufacturers hear your side of this, so that hopefully all of us can better meet your expectations.

In my garage I have a long board and a short board.  Both were made by highly respected manufactures.  There are compression dents all over both.  I have stickers on the nose were I have repaired dings.  I replaced a fin that broke off.  Yet I still love these boards, and I never once thought to call the manufacturer and complain.  A surf board is a piece of foam and some resin.  I didn't expect the boards to be perfect forever.  Some of the most magic surfboards I've owned, look like crap.  That is just my opinion.  I want to hear yours.

Thanks

Hey Guys,
On Friday, we will be in Incline Village to visit one of our dealers. You can stop by Adrift Tahoe and check out our boards. We will be paddling on the lake and taking some pictures.

Saturday/ Sunday we will be in Reno for the White Water Festival. It's in Wingfield Park in downtown Reno. I'll have a few boards out for people to play on.

Sunday afternoon, we are heading back up to Tahoe for some paddling on the CA side.

Call me at 559-351-5588 if you would like to join us.  The water is cold, but it's beautiful this time of year.

Take care

Technique / Installing a deck pad

I'm sure that most of you guys know how to put on a deck pad.  Many of you probably have some great tips that make it really easy.  For anyone who has never put on a deck pad, this little video is for you.  It's not the only way to do it, but it's simple and effective.  Enjoy.

SUP General / Hello from Tomahawk Paddle Boards
« on: April 18, 2009, 08:46:25 PM »
Hey SUPers,

I wanted to take a minute and introduce myself and my company to the forum.  My name is Evan and I live in Fresno, CA.  I grew up in Arizona and as soon as I finished high school, I moved to Los Angeles to learn how to surf.  As a kid we took lots of trips to CA, and it was always my dream to ride waves.  I lived in LA for 6 years and surfed several times a week.  After getting married, my new bride finished college and we moved to Fresno were she took a teaching job.  After the move, I my surfing became much more sporadic and weekend trips to Santa Cruz became less and less frequent.

Luckily for me I was introduced to white water kayaking and some adventure was put back into my life.  I felt for the first time a real sense of community in kayaking.  Kayakers put their lives in their fellow boaters hands, so you can't be a dick and expect anyone to boat with you.  The thing that shocked me from surfing in So cal to kayaking rivers, was how nice kayakers are.  I wished surfing was like that.

Like most of you, I discovered SUP a couple of years ago and it literally got me back into surfing.  It was the best of both worlds for me.  I could ride waves, but also paddle around and explore.  My kayak buddies started coming to the coast with me and then it was on.  We didn't care how rude surfers were, we would just find our own break and surf our butts off.  Back in Fresno, we stared paddling down rivers and even surfing river waves.  Everyone was loving it.

Last year I decided it was time to start a SUP company that blended the spirit of both surfing and kayaking.  A company with a simple mission, The Freedom to Surf Anywhere.  We hooked up with Newport Beach shaper Brian Erikson, and after months of shaping prototypes, we came up with our five models.  Our boards are a blend of CA surf and AZ art.  I grew up with Native Americans and I dig their style.  Some of you may not like graphics on your board, but we do.

The reason I am telling you all of this is simple.  I am introducing myself to you with hopes that you will make us part of the Zone family.  I think it's rude when companies start posting a bunch of spam to get you to visit their site. Just like in surfing,  I figured I had better introduce myself before people start thinking I'm a kook.

Anyway, I hope you guys can appreciate what Tomahawk Paddle Boards is all about.  I look forward to your feedback and sharing the SUP lifestyle with you.

Take care
Evan
