I grabbed a few shots while attending the Santa Cruz Paddlefest. The conditions were an intense combination of wind, rain, and cold weather. Everyone who competed should get a medal, as those were by far the worst conditions I have ever seen anyone compete in. Most of the guys couldn't even stand on their boards, and many dropped out of the contest before surfing in their second heats. That said, it was a fun weekend and everyone had a great time. Hopefully next year will have better weather. Enjoy the video. Santa Cruz Paddlefest.movFor the official results, check out http://californiastandup.com

I just noticed this event wasn't posted here on the Zone, so I thought I'd throw it up at the last minute. Tomorrow, Oct 23rd, there is an SUP race in Morro Bay, CA. "The 2010 race is on Saturday October 23, with a 9 AM start. There is a mandatory competitors meeting at 8 AM at the race site, Coleman Beach. There is both a short course (2.7 miles) and a long course (5.9 miles), and both courses start and finish at Coleman Beach. This annual paddle event is a fundraiser for the Estero Bay Junior Lifeguard programs and a celebration of our friend Jesse's passion, his devotion to living life to its fullest, and being a first class waterman." Tomahawk and many other manufacturers and vendors will be on hand doing demos on the beach. Then the following morning, the same vendors will be doing a surf demo, so you can try out various SUPs on real waves. Tomahawk will have a grip of short SUPS for people to try out, including the popular 7-11 XL. We hope you can make it to the event. All the detailed information can be found at the following link: http://www.centralcoastsup.com/Jesse_King_Memorial_Race.phpSee you there Evan

The Boys have been logging a ton of time in the Sierras this season. I've witnessed things I never thought possible on an SUP. I can't wait to share the footage with you. All I can say is it's coming and you won't be disappointed.

So-Cal has Trestles, Nor-Cal has The Lane, Mid-Cal has the Alta Weir. Right now the dam is releasing 6100 cfs. By July, that number will double. It's hard to say what the increase in flow will do to the wave. It varies from year to year, depending on how they set up the Weir. The Weir is a series of concrete pillars with 2x12 planks stuffed in between. The water rushes over the weir, lands on a concrete pad, and where the pad ends, the wave is formed. We've been kayaking the Weir for years. Last year was the first time it was surfed on an SUP. This video is from my 2nd session out there this season. I look forward to many more. I have a couple of boards getting glassed that are designed for this wave. They are super short, and should be really fun to play on. The board in this video is an old 9-6. Hopefully with more practice, we can learn to make really nice turns that flow together. Right now I feel like a grom who is just learning to turn. It'll get better :-) Enjoy Evan Tomahawk River Surfing
