Gear Talk / EPS blanks

Anyone know how much EPS blanks cost and where to get them in Hawaii (wide enough for stand ups)?

I glass all my stuff with epoxy now, even poly blanks.

When glassing poly blanks with epoxy, do you use the same amount of glass as you would using polyester resin? Do you find that the epoxy resin is less prone to pressure dents? Do poly blanks glassed with epoxy come out lighter than poly blanks glassed with polyester resin?
Thanks for your help

Was he able to get that helicopter around?

Yeah he made it, this shot was the end of that wave I think:

He also pulled a nice little barrel-tuck-in-slide-out:

The water was so insanely choppy and there was no real swell, just 15-20mph wind waves.

Yeah that is Leleo here on Kauai at the first ever SUP contest (I think). Yes, of course he won.

DW you might not step on your leash if you point in backwards.  ;D

Sometimes when it's really crowded you can stay inside of all the regular surfers and paddle out when you see the sets. this lets you catch the inside double ups that even the longboarders cant get in to. You have plenty of room to move around and it doesn't look like you're wave hogging. When I sit outside of the surfers sometimes it's too tempting to grab all the set waves.

It all depends on the break that you surf. Sometimes when it's high tide and mushy I can sit farther deeper than the prone  surfers, get in early, and make the wave. This is kinda fun because the surfers can't get in as early as you so they have to sit farther inside and farther over.

I think SUBs get it to waves much easier than longboards or shortboards if you're in the right position. It can be hard sometimes when you're too far out and you have to claw your way into em, especially on a 8-9' board, but it's better than not getting into them when you're prone surfing.

Lets see some pics!

Does the board feel soft when you grab it? Check out hydroturf deck padding. They have "grade B" sheets of foam for $25.

I saw that guys fish in a magazine. It's advertised as 32" wide by 8'. It was captioned as "The worlds smallest stand up paddle board". I guess they haven't seen the 7'7 'flame ball stand up company' board...

The Shape Shack / High density inserts
« on: September 27, 2007, 07:48:29 PM »
Maybe some of you EPS shapers or owners of EPS boards can fill me in on this:

When is it necessary to  use high density inserts for fin boxes in EPS foam?
All the hand made epoxy paddle boards I've seen didn't look like they had foam inserts in the boxes, is it only needed in 1lb EPS blanks?

I've seen a guy here on Kauai who had a Terry Chung paddle board and it had like a double concave in the back 1/3 of the deck. Looked kinda interesting...
