Burchas, do you use any of the FT-S tails? I had the 14.5 short for a while but ultimately sold it and kept the L. The L already turns on a dime for me

YES, you need more gear !! Interesting that you also have the mast all the way back and the front straps all the way forward (me too), though I'm always using the 1150 with the 14.5 ft-L. In fact I'm always amazed how far forward my rear foot appears to be, nowhere near any of the footstrap holes. That would be completely unnatural, of course every board is going to be different. I just picked up the 20 ft-L but never considered using it with the 1150, just used it with a GL240 the other day in light conditions, it's huge. You're not gonna get going as quickly with the 14.5 but suspect you may be able to move aft a hair with it. I will have to try your combo at some point

Schmeer a thin layer of Tef-Gel in it. Don't bother rinsing.

We focus a lot on mast stiffness, but not necessarily on foil wing stiffness. Why is that? Wouldn't a flexy foil wing have just as much (possibly more) of an impact on the system as the mast? I'd guess that my Takuma wing flexes more than my Cedrus mast.
Am I wrong? Does it matter?
The 1099 has some flex in in it being so thin out near the tips. Probably no way to avoid this without making it a $1500 wing. Seems like it's more than half of the flex in the system I'm feeling. The RS 1300 by contrast is like an I-beam by comparison but only 5cm shorter. Thicker foil section out near the tips and wider chord.

My takeaway from the Wake Thief video was that the new HM Axis carbon was actually a little stiffer in roll (deflection) than the 19mm aluminum. It was yaw where the aluminum was stiffer. 'Seems' like more stiffness in yaw would be less important than roll but that's just guessing. I'm just not buying any more foiling gear without demoing first (yeah, even I don't believe me

If you've got one laying around unused, please send me a PM.

Sure a 450 or 475P will work but one of the local sponsored guys said wait a couple of months as Axis is about to release an entire series of wall art specific tail wings. Each comes with an 89° shim

Slightly lighter but still 4.2 conditions yesterday, bolted both setups to the 70L 4'9" board. Aside from the always tricky start of the -20L board, way more fun. More noticeable slight edge in glide going to the 1099 but so small that there's no real benefit to it in these conditions. Top speeds identical, 21.5ish. Never went in once on the RS 1300, 2-3 times on the 1099. Re-starting really drains the energy, especially so on the small board. Perhaps in perfectly flat water I might be able to tell the difference between the 380 speed (arguably their fastest best gliding), and the 420 speed I'm using but not in active conditions with large areas of lifting and sinking forces (I've also tried the 350P with it). Big difference in the forces acting on our wings in wingfoiling conditions and SUP foiling conditions (a single nice glassy breaking wave). I think the 1099 is far better suited to the latter and /or downwind SUP foiling than wingfoiling (at least in over 20mph winds). It works and It's interesting. I really do like it but I haven't found it's forte yet for wingfoiling in the Gorge. At worst I'll hang it on the wall as wingfoiling art .

Was able to do some interesting (to me) gear comparisons yesterday in well powered 4.2 conditions at the Hatchery. The wind continues to outperform the forecast, hoping today is similar. I'm 90Kg all up, 1099, 82cm 19mm, 420, short: first try on the Alu mast and it's a little more predictable in behavior than the (old) carbon 86. Won't stop using the carbon though. Can't say I noticed any difference in drag, of course there has to be at 14.5mm vs 19mm but in real world 15-30 and 2-3' waves it's pretty much irrelevant. Never had any intention of using this setup in this much wind but it does work 'ok'. Switched over to the Go Foil RS 1300 at 105cm span, 8.5ish AR (specs are STILL incorrect on GF's page), 14.5L tail, same 100L board. Haven't used it in a while. Figured it might be somewhat comparable to the 1099. In the above conditions I can detect NO difference in glide but maneuverability and general user friendliness are well beyond the 1099. Logic dictates there should be some straight line advantage in glide to the 1099 but so far not seeing it. The 1300 gets going sooner as well which is handy. Pumpability is similar. I definitely am spending way more time in the water and re-starting on the 1099, when it's 100+ degrees that is kind of an advantage More testing today, if it's similar may screw them on the 70L board.

The two most important bits of information seem to be missing from the manufacturers website; 1. How thick is it? 2. What does it weigh?

This is an unusually long hot spell for July and it's not even blowing at the coast, fogged in. Logic dictates somewhere in between must be super windy, probably Jones beach (Clatskanie Oregon), just East of Astoria along the Columbia. Three hour drive but if it's on it will blow until dark.

There are still some folks doing SUP Viento runs, saw one on a run last Friday. It's such a brief moment in time to see them. The Gorge Paddle Challenge is this weekend so there will likely be plenty if there's wind. You should also be fine in August, there are many paddlers here dedicated to downwind in all types of craft. Probably the best post covid strategy is to either meet other downwind oriented types AT Viento or at the Event Site as they come in. I've had folks drive me back to Viento who were just on there way into town and I've returned the favor. No way you'll get stranded
