Temira was way off on the forecast yesterday, wind kicked in just as I turned around to head into it on my paddle ::)

Thanks to all you guys again for the personal experiences! I wasn't able to draw out the research and shopping experience as long as I'd hoped and after an almost instant response to queries from 'Lenny" at Axis, a 1010 / 390 combo should be on the way next week when 390's come in  (went to directly through the Axis site).
Nobody specifically mentioned that combo but if 340's and 370's work ok... I just like the shape of it, one I'm used to and no pointy carbon bits pointing upward toward me ;D

Winging, windsurfing, and other stuff, it's a perfectly fine launch. Not so great for launching a kite.

It's a beautiful spot from out on the water and the wind quality is often better than other places in the Gorge (which isn't a high bar). Water conditions... meh.
This situation if nothing else has really highlighted how limited water access from the Oregon side is.

Thanks for the info guys! What I've learned about myself is it's best to draw out the research and purchase phase as long as possible. Once the item(s) are acquired I'll start looking for what might be better ::)
That said, it's my civic duty to spend money right now :)

Hi Admin,
I would need a complete setup but just poking around it looks like it might be a custom package. The 1010 front wing would be the main reason to move in this direction. Ultra short fuse, 90cm mast and a stab to be determined. Assume the 390 is not likely an available item yet and probably want something longer for the 1010 anyway.

Has anyone done a back to back comparison of the power/range of the 3.6 Naish and 3.5 Swing?

That 390 looks great, almost an exact replica of my Gong 40cm.

I was going to pick up a second 100cm carbon mast from Gong but who knows when or if those guys will ever ship internationally again. The "Access to Axis" may win out assuming there is access and I wanted a slightly shorter mast anyway.

Admin or PB, as Oregon folks, who's your favorite dealer of this stuff (pm me if you feel that's better)? I Don't think anyone in the Gorge is a dealer, assuming it has to be mail ordered.

As a Hood River county resident my 'gut' feeling is July looks promising and my gut has been considerably more accurate than Trump's consistently. Oregon or Washington plates on your car would be an advantage but even with those don't take the Mosier exit off I84, even to turn around :o

Dave, if you were to just jibe normally and ride toeside on that tack, would your front foot stay out on the left rail, or would you do a couple of toe scrunches towards the center? I see your back foot's opposing it but just curious if you usually make adjustments.

I'm hoping the XL pro will be big enough for my 87Kg (more like 90 of late with all this sitting around :-[), in fact hoping to use the Large most of the time but our wind conditions will allow for this. Decided against the XXL for packability reasons and just assumed it would be a slow turning wing but your video proves otherwise, I'm impressed.

Now I've only ridden four brands in various price ranges, all have a slightly different feel but certainly nothing there to justify the significant cost differences between them. In fact the Gong stuff has been the most "fun" feeling of all of them so far, even with the aluminum parts. With the carbon mast and pro "clear" wings out now I even get my "quality" fix. Sad it's not as easy to obtain even in the best of times and impossible right now in the US. Still I will likely order a 4M Pulse and one of their boards shortly, I'll get the stuff eventually.

What I really don't understand is how you can have two different brands, both made in China, and one is 3x the cost of the other. It makes sense that companies that manufacture in 1st world countries like Moses and Armstrong are going to be more expensive and maybe have slightly closer manufacturing tolerances (the latter is debatable).

295
Looking good :)
It does seem like the drop from the XXL pro (2800ish) to the XL pro (2000ish) is a big one. Maybe not though in the larger sizes(?)
The big one does appear to move along just fine, but do you really need it. Maybe just upgrade to the 100cm carbon mast (saw that breach  ;)), it's really a work of art, right in there with Moses for build quality.

In what way would the Armstrong be an upgrade besides build? I'd want to do some lengthy demos before making that jump. Both of the above may be obsolete next year anyway...

Thanks for the info Dave!
Yup, the 1100 looks like a great compromise. I have an XL pro that hasn't been wet yet, who knows when. I have many hours now on the L pro / 40 stab kiting and absolutely love it, hope to use it for winging as well eventually. Just bought the M pro as well but also hasn't been wet. I whacked into a chunk of lava this winter at speed on the Large, expected to see the boxes half out of the board but just surprisingly little damage to the LE. Not even worth filling.

Was also interested in the XXL pro initially for downwind paddling (but I'm 87Kg) have since decided the pain / fun ratio for the sport doesn't add up for me, for paddling I'll stick with my F-16. That said, winging downwinders will be my main focus, the ability to go back and do a section again seals the deal. Our usual run is only an hour anyway on a fast SUP, don't want to shorten that even further with foils and doing two runs is too much trouble. 1.5 - 2 hours would be just right.

Meanwhile back at the topic...

297
Looking good Dave!

OT but if you get a minute... Is that the 55 stab? And do you use the Large pro as well sometimes? Would you say that was absolute minimum wind for that setup?

Thanks!

Admittedly I'm speculating ;) and one of my stats is off above. The 5' 95 liter board is in fact 5'6 95 liters so a bit more out in front. Hoping to sell my 140 liter board and get into something in the 95 liter range as my "Island". For a smaller board, I don't think I can sink 60L like the guy in the video and already have the 29L so will certainly play around with it when the water warms up a bit (nothing to do but dream right now).

Admin, it took half a dozen sessions kiting it to get used to how quickly the little board responds, the big board has its place though.
Great tip Dwight, using the wing as an outrigger!

Cool, he really made that look easy. Still I don't see any advantage to a "mid" sized board like 60 liters vs a fully floating "island" of 95 liters. There's just not enough swing weight difference. The difference between 95 and 30 though, now your feel'in it :)

Board specs brand X:
4'11" 65 liters 4.8kg
5'0"   95 liters 6.0kg

4'5"  29 liter surf foil board 2.8kg

Have also heard one reputable rider say that longer and heavier is helpful for downwinding.
