Yes, it is humbling.  It also verifies that this activity of ours not one of kooks, oar people or any of that.....

Technique / Re: How to bail out on a beachy?
« on: June 02, 2011, 07:39:48 PM »
You've got it right that spending time in less than perfect beachbreak will pay off once out in better conditions.  You are making technique advances that won't be obvious till later on.
As far as the bail out - just as the wave is about to dump turn straight to the beach sticking the paddle in the water to balance in the turbulence from behind, then as the foam catches up to you step way back on the tail.  This stalls you and the board saving from a dumping onto the sandbar.  Good  luck.

Due to a large portion of my surf time spent at beachbreaks, the tops of my toes seem to be in a constantly cut open state from time spent knee paddeling-still better than sore shoulders.  Started to go at the edges with an exacto knife but gave up due to time req'd to finnish.

Just gonna get caluses on the tops of my toes.

Great pic of the point from the ligthouse.  Growing up I surfed ditch plains and cavett's cove alot.  I always remember looking at that point wave but never tried to ride it.  It would be quite fun standup surfing it.

That is exactly my question.

And thank you for lifting the fog of confusion I have had over these materials.  I've posted a short while ago here over a repair gone wrong.  What you describe occurred and tail of the board filled during a fin box repair.

Gear Talk / epoxy vs. fiberglass - flotation comparison
« on: May 16, 2011, 07:09:25 AM »
Would like to get a custom shape and want to better understand how the smaller volume of a fiberglass board effects the flotation compared to a similar length epoxy.  I'm trying to get my old surfboard shaper to try a sup shape.  He has a slightly 'fished out' shortboard shape that I can visualize all puffed up into a sup.

Colas, thanks alot for the numbers- that helps alot.  In your opinion, at what width does an 8' pointed nose start to lose the paddle glide  - 100kg rider?

I agree completely.   If you can swing it $ then a wider board for the bumpy days really increases the fun factor.  Your weight depending, 30in or wider would be the stable platform for the chop.
There is though something to be said for pushing out of the comfort (ie   wide and stable) and struggling in the chop to progress your technique.
Keep at it.
