Love the videos, great skating.
I skate with carver trucks - swing arm front truck - on a smooth suface just pumping will keep you going endlessly. Just like the stick. I want one, but over here there 2 bills. Have tried unsuccessfully to use raw bamboo and rubber ball.
Skating, old school style, is a strong balancing side activity when not able to be aboard.

Actually, the safety point does exist if we keep the "line up" in focus. A group of surfers is riding a defined wave repeatly over the same track. Our boards and leashes add up to twice the impact weight and strike distance. Watch a prone surfer wipe out. Their light little board ends up pretty close to them. We, on the otherhand, can do some serious damage or foul up the lineup.
I'm sure some mysto Hawaiian can control his board ok. I know myself that once the board has caught the wave, if I've gotta turn to avoid collision or surf around the inevitable obstacle, this turn is next to impossible from my knees. If you've gotta abort the takeoff, near impossible.
If where you are surfing doesn't really have a clear lineup, than the surfers are spread out. You can surf how you want.

I moved once to okinawa and decided with my first meal there to ditch the knife and fork and commit to chopsticks. Sup has been the same, no looking back. Though at first I was back to square one as a surfer, this period quickly passed. I'll just prone once and a while with my kids and when I do I'll feel stranded. Bodysurfing a big closeout beachbreak does still entice. Probably +95% sup.

I always describe it as a healthy addiction. I just arrived home after a four hour surf. Besides the fully worked feelings from my shoulders and endless loop surf playbacks going through my head, there is something else...
buzz, vibration, afterglow. Later, I'm gonna just want some more.

You're right, we're takin this way too seriously. As long as no one is getting hurt, surfing is just playing in the waves.
Scott.. I have coffin'd many times, not always on purpose, it's fun. But how long have you been in the wave zone on a sup? I totally agree that it can be part of the learning curve. Just yesterday taught a friend to catch some waves on his knees, totally stoked on his first day on a sup.
In think where this might qualify as a more serious point is when you enter the lineup where higher level surfing is taking place. Not the beginner spot or uncrowded quiet break, the established spot that the sup community is working hard to be accepted at. Before we go there we need to be able to control our board and emit confidence. Until onyourkneespaddle surfing becomes more known it won't be that. As long as the surfers next to you seem at ease, then all is probably well.

Or to relate to the other surfers. I'm usually the only sup, so between sets I'll descend to my knees to talk normally.
If you're next to your board in the soup after a fall, just crawl onto your board prone, paddle by your side and paddle quick. The fastest way to get your board moving.
Other than that, if you gotta be on your knees, you should be away from the crowd. You don't have your balance yet because you're just starting out, or your board is too small for your abilities. Have a blast, away from where the group of surfers sit. If you keep at it you should be quickly past this stage.

So my wife asks me what I'm drooling about as I watch this vid, "do you know how few surfers there are in OZ compared to the miles of surfable coast? It' paradise." "yea and see the smiling big fish, spiders and snakes in those bushes?"
Somehow I think I could deal with it.
Thanks for another topper!

From NOAA. Leslie now NE of puerto rico, waves 2-5' along most of east coast unrelated to storm. The surf from her will start to hit going into Wednesday. First places to show being south florida, outerbanks and cape cod area. The swell will increase to 6-8+' by weekend and fill in along whole east coast. The track is projected to curve NNE, hopefully in an arc to the north east. We should start to see her swell over here after the weekend. Great swell to all!

Holy cow! I'll be watching this for the rest of the day. Really interesting and effective camera angles, long mounting arms, rail mounts; especialy on the nose rides, the camera floated.
Top tube riding video as well. The wider the sup, the harder it is to have this experience. Thanks creek.

It will get better with practice. I've lived some periods of my life in places that forced me to master the backside. I actually like it, has a different feel than frontside. Neils, if you look close, your one frontside sequence is strong because your back foot is over the rail and front foot over the stringer. You can then get the board up on its side. On your backside, the opposite happens as your front foot goes to the rail and the back foot actually moves to the other side of the center. Resulting turns are flat. Keep surfing.

Cowichan, thanks for the vid. My favorite sup is a full longboard, 11 oh. Although getting it to the water is a battle, on the water is a full party, longboarding on steroids. Supthecreek says it for me. Sometimes reading around the zone, I can feel a bit out of touch as others write about the seemingly holiness of the short sup. I work hard to master a 115liter short sup, but most of my sup joy stems from the glide on the big board.

Arched sandals are more comfortable than flat by far, especially for walking a ways. Probably gotta give out 40 bucks or more for a decent pair. Reefs are comfortable from the get go, and thanks to Bill I'll give my rainbows another chance. I guess along with my 3 cheap flat pairs I could have had one pair olukais. But then I wouldn't have had enough.

Some years ago a sports journalist made the comparison of the average tour df steepness vs the average speed over the whole tour. Up until '91 and Miguel Indurain, the steeper the tour the slower the riders went. Logical to me. From '91 until lance retired, the steeper the tour was the faster they rode. This time span also covers the invention of epo til the development of the test for it. These days the steepness vs speed is back to a logical result.

It was Ikei island, thanks for the memory assistance. I remember how the locals would continue as if all was normal way past the time then military bases went on lockdown. The local houses are pretty tough little cement blocks. I guess if they start to duck it would be wise to follow. Hope the storm damage is not too bad. Enjoy the post storm surf.
