So this is what’s needed to beat the anti-surf conspiracy of small summer swell, morning high tide and the afternoon onshore blow out.

While I missed filming a bunch of good ones by not getting the camera in the mouth quick enough, got some. Enjoy.

So here I am watching the tow-in contest from Portugal,in and out of the house all day. This last bit, maybe the final heat, don’t know for sure as the commentary has dropped for a while, has just shown an accident. A bad one. A surfer or driver is down.
I am watching the twitter feed and can not yet find out who?

So after a few clean and uncrowded days at this spot the core of the swell hit as well as 20-30 hungry ones with guns. Bumpy and busy would describe it. The first significant waves of the winter season had me anxious but it was the crowd that put me off my game. So instead of the big wave board and entering the pack, I opted for the performance longboard and would play the fringes.
My custom Sunova Surf is the ticket to calm the nerves. Mobility and stability. Paddlesurfhawaii quads L, 12’ long, thick and hand tied leash from StayCovered. And a kite surf vest with an inner belt to keep it from getting pulled over my head in a wipeout. When I first paddled out I tried under the pack but after taking a bomb set on the head, testing my kit, I retreated to the inside peak. And got lucky with a photog.

So on what will most likely be my last visit here due impending retirement, I guess I got lucky. Thanks to Tom’s very cool site advice I was clearly able to judge where to find some of the NW swell that wasn’t getting blocked by the Channel Islands.
Ventura was getting some and you boys in San Diego definitely scored. But being on a mostly beachbreak diet at home I decided to immerse myself in the tasty little rock point 15 min from the hotel.
Special thanks to the Olympic board shop for the excellent rental. A Rawson 8-6x31 Impala SS. A slightly blown up version of the custom I have at home.
Two mornings spending the complete low to high tide cycle in the water. First day, Sunday was pretty crowded, but today was a charm. Even a bit alone in between the dawn patrollers and the morning crew.
The spot is, I think a no-go zone for sups judging by the WTF reaction from a few. One of these did point away when I made eye contact. But yea, I know from experience that if I don’t give them anything, they will most probably not say anything. And they didn’t. That meant staying the whole time the furthest inside taking only what got past and never getting in the way. Point break scraps are still choice morsels.
And for a short period alone and then with a couple of chill surfers this morning I got some great set waves.

Hi guys, About to do a quick pass thru, Sunday and Monday. The swell will be long period direct west about 3-5’ with favorable winds in the am.
Any tips for spots that pick up the a west swell? San Clemente to county line past Malibu is about what I’ll range.
Thanks

This was a long 5m+ edit but a cool new mod makes this possible. https://player.vimeo.com/video/168304125#t=283sActually link is getting hijacked by this vigilink crew? Anybody here can figure this out? You just have to click skip add and go to vid and it works.

Nighttime, within 10deg of the equator and convective weather close by producing the rare effect of St Elmo’s Fire. This is the surrounding static electricity arcing on the outside of the cockpit window.
