How is the rocker on this board?  From the pictures, it looks like it has too much tail rocker (or the board was not inflated enough).

I had a custom made by Steve a few years back - 9'6" Magic Model - 29.5" wide.  I sold the board because I moved away from SOCAL, but with the paddle, I could turn that board as hard as I could a prone shortboard.  I've also had two of Steve's longboards (also with the Magic Model bottom contours) and I loved those as well.  I would NOT get the 9'11" - you'll wish you had something shorter in less than a month of using it.

9'6" is really a great length - not too short that waves pass under you because you can't generate enough speed to catch the smaller slow rollers, and not to big that you can't get into the pocket quickly after take off.

I wish I still had that board...

Wet Okoles!!!  They are expensive, but they are custom and really nice.  However, they are not 100% waterproof (what is short of a plastic bag on your seat?).  I'd augment whatever car seat cover you do get with a towel.

I've checked the online dealers that sold the Aguera -

Seems like the boards are not currently available...  maybe a new batch is being ordered from the factory???

All I know is I've got mine and this is one board I can tell I will never get rid of - it is just way to versatile and stable.

Awesome!

I just picked up a Suntech Field Master (for my birthday - I didn't get home fast enough and my wife intercepted it - she insists on wrapping it and keeping me from opening it until my actual birthday a couple of weeks away).

I just counted by rods - 7 tenkara to 5 conventional.  My spinning rods add another 7, my casting/trolling another 3.

Man I have a problem... not enough time to paddle and fish!!!

The secret is - any SUP can be used to go fishing from.  You just end up dealing with the rod and reel in different ways - a belt equipped with a rod holder; a full on fishing basket; a hand line; or even just a rod kept between your feet until it's time to stop paddling and drop a line.  Even on the narrowest of boards you just have to sit down and you increase your stability.  Don't let the fact that your current board isn't a purpose built fishing board stop you from going out.

Everytime I've tried to eat shark, the ammonia in its blood makes the meat go bad.  Was that a problem with this fish?

If money and space were not objects, I would have two of every size (two is one - one is none; a lesson learned on a far away island with two 8 wt rods and some bonefish).

Paired with the rods under 5 wt would be simple reels - click and pawl drags (I'd keep those light and just palm them if needed).  Above the 5 wt rods I'd get sealed drag large arbor reels.

And I'd have two lines of tenkara rods - stiffer and softer.

I used to have a problem acquiring and never letting go of boards - SUP, shortboard, longboard, kitesurfing, windsurfing, and even boogies.  A couple of years ago I started culling that herd and now just have what I regularly use.  Now i have a new problem and it is called fishing equipment...

Lucabrasi -

Order a Daiwa Kiyose 43MF from www.tenkarabum.com - there is even a used rod section there that has some gems from time to time.  I have landed 20"+ carp with this rod.  And that was from land.  With the added feature of using the board as drag, you should have a blast!

For flyfishing, I don't have Western Fly gear below 5wt.  This is the area where I am mainly using my tenkara gear - way less expensive to acquire (no reel, line is very inexpensive) and with the right rod (or rods) you have all the reach you could want at this lightweight end of the flyfishing spectrum - how far can most people cast a 3wt line anyways???  I said "rods" because at some point you start collecting them - same problem I have with western gear... but that's for a different post/forum.  If you are hiking into a headstream, the shorter and softer rods will draw you in to catch wild trout.  If you are only going for carp or bass, the "keiryu" range of tenkara rods (stiffer and usually longer) - the Daiwa Kiyose 43MF fits this bill.

I still use my 5wt when I go to big, open water so I can reach further out - but it is usually blind casting.  And when I am out on the salt, I'll use my 8 wts - the right gear for the right conditions - but tenkara certainly has earned a place in my quiver of fishing tools.

How have you found the durability between the two?  Is either one more resistant to chips/dings/scrapes than the other?  I have never seen a SB Fisherman in person, but from I have read, the finish was made to be a bit more resistant to the above forms of damage.  I believe the Aguera is made in the same factory as Jimmy Lewis boards and they have similar damage resistance (better than many of the others, but not the best and not impervious).  I've been happy with the Hooked SUP, but then again I am anal and take way more precaution than I need to with all my boards.

Extending the content of this thread some more, can the Bote owners weigh in on their experiences?  The boards look really nice and the rack accessory is a winner in my book - but I have never paddled one or seen one in action (catching a fish).

Hey - I must have lots of skill as my Big Easy was taking beyond vert drops in head high! A lot come down to body weight. I'm a heavy bloke and can't get into waves early, it's a late drop or nothing :)

You've got to try before you buy really to be sure :)

True - a lot of this comes down to body weight.  And wave characteristics.  And individual skill.

I am 180 on a bad day with a full suit on.  I cannot get the tail to suck down and the nose to lift on longer boards during steep takeoffs in beach breaks.  On point breaks - yes.

And I agree on trying before buying - it makes everyone happy.

« on: September 24, 2013, 05:06:50 PM »
I have surfed this board out in Hawaii (Waikiki, not North Shore - it was summer time), out on the Outer Banks and in Virginia Beach.  Pretty much the areas I have lived in.

I especially like this board for beach break waves (in Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks, there are no point breaks or reefs).  I don't have to worry about dings anymore and often ride the waves to the beach.  I have been surfing for over 25 years - boogie boards, shortboards, longboards, prone paddleboards, windsurfing, kitesurfing, SUPs, paipos and surfmats) and with this board, I routinely have the most fun I've had in the water.  This may not be the case for you or most others out there, but since you are moving to San Diego, I recommend you go to the ULI factory and go talk to them.  They are good people and will help you figure out if an ULI is right for you or not.  I plan on ordering a Lopez 9'0" trifin from them soon.

I do not get paid by anyone out there to sell boards - just opinions.

For the FAQ, I end up having to use the paddle a whole lot more to turn the board because the rails towards the rear of the board do not have a sharp edge like hard boards (ULI has fixed that with their Wiki rail), but with the quad setup this board has, I really just surf it expecting a loose tail.

From the description of what you wanted to do with a single board from your other post, it seems to me an ULI Steamroller with a wiki rail would serve you well (stores easy, fits in a duffle bag that you can check on an airline, paddles on flat water ok, surfs non-beachbreak good - think anything you would take a longboard out in, serves as a fishing platform).

I am 180#

Like I said on the first post - I am planning on river surfing with this board on the Potomac River - this board really does everything (except paddle in straight lines)!

Let me know if you have other questions -

Following up on this board.

I've used in saltwater, on lakes and on the Potomac River.  It will get you on top of fish - quietly and even if you spook them on the way to a spot, they've returned after only a short period of time (as compared to motoring in with a boat/skiff).

With the Scotty mounts and the bungee grid, I have regularly taken two flyrods and a spinning rod - several 3600 tackle boxes and even a 45 quart cooler to sit on (and hold refreshing beverages).

I use a 5lb dumbbell for anchor and have used a kayak drouge to slow drift.

I do not currently use the fin it came with only because there are rocks where I paddle/fish.  I use a 9" Surfco Rubber fin so I don't annoy myself with nicks in the fin (which I would subsequently fix due to my anal retentive nature).

If you have had reservations about a fishing board - throw them ou tthe window and get one (this is a good one).
