Gear Talk / KeNalu mana 90 vs konihi 95
« on: July 28, 2021, 01:24:16 PM »
After losing my konihi 95 paddle :'( that I've been using for years, I'm trying to decide whether to replace it with another of the same or switch to the mana 90. I've read through all the the existing threads here a couple of times already, but I'm still uncertain. Some of the observations from these threads that have stuck with me:
  • Mana is slower in flatwater: I don't race a lot any more, but even when touring or paddling for fitness, I don't want to go much slower at a given level of effort than I can with my Konihi
  • Mana is more forgiving of sloppy entry (less susceptible to Konihi's "toilet flush" effect if not perfectly planted): This sounds like a good thing, as I'm often paddling in choppy coastal conditions where getting a perfectly clean catch every time requires more concentration than I'm prepared to sustain.
  • Mana is most efficient in 1st 1/3rd of stroke, less so afterwards: Does this mean I'll generate less power per stroke with the Mana, or that the same amount of power will be concentrated more in the 1st 1/3rd than in the rest of the stroke? I tend to have a long, heavy stroke and pull hard on the paddle all the way back to my feet with my Konihi. If the Mana helps me shorten my stoke and pick up my cadence a bit with the same amount of power and effort, that would be a good thing. If it just has a more limited effective range and will make each stroke less powerful overall, then I'd probably be better off sticking with the konihi
  • Mana feels like a relatively larger paddle (i.e. 90 feels more like a Konihi 95): I started with a Maliko, then tried a small Konihi (hated it) and quickly traded that one for the 95 konihi. I tend to prefer a long, heavy, slow stroke and really don't like the fast cadence needed to get the most out of a smaller paddle, so I wouldn't want a paddle that feels distinctly smaller than a Konihi 95.

I'd appreciate any feedback from KeNalu users on whether I should try the mana or stick with the konihi.

Thanks!

Gear Talk / Weed fin for JL Sidewinder
« on: July 05, 2020, 05:49:12 PM »
Can anyone recommend a better weed-shedding all-around fin for the Jimmy Lewis Sidewinder? The stock fin seems to have a good enough balance of tracking, stability, and maneuverability for my use, but it's AWFUL at shedding eelgrass and similar stringy seaweed. I've tried the SIC Weedless (7" ?) from my Bullet on the sidewinder, and that's much better at shedding the weeds, but it makes the sidewinder a bit tippier than I'm comfortable with.

I mainly race and tour this board in flatwater and coastal chop (quartering wind, reflected waves, etc), so I'm more interested in speed and stability than downwind/surfiness.

Thanks!

SUP General / Storing boards in PODS container
« on: June 02, 2019, 01:40:46 PM »
I've got to move everything out of my garage for a month or so this summer while it's under construction, and I was thinking a PODS storage container would fit all my boards, lawn and garden tools, and other gear securely in my driveway. My only concern is the heat... does anyone know if these get hot enough if parked in the sun to cause any problems for SUPs? Any other experience or tips on these, or good alternatives?

Thanks!

Gear Talk / glue on handle recommendations?
« on: April 06, 2019, 07:50:48 AM »
I'm looking to add some handles to the front of my 14' Bullet V2 so my 3 y.o. daughter has something to hang onto when she rides along with me. Initially I was thinking of just adding a couple of the soft race handles like those that my old SIC X-14 Pro had, but I just noticed the Bullet doesn't have the screw holes for these.

Any recommendations for something I can just glue on, that will hold securely and be comfortable for small hands?

Thanks!

NorthWest / Best time of year to visit Hood River?
« on: July 13, 2018, 07:57:07 AM »
I'd like to visit Hood River some time. When's the best time of year out there for downwinding in the Gorge, taking into account reliability of weather and water conditions, crowds, availability of rentals, shuttles, etc? I'm not looking for nuking conditions (at least my first trip!  ;D), just some good steady wind where I can catch bumps and get some nice long glides.

Thanks!

Gear Talk / Backup Paddle
« on: June 24, 2018, 06:08:10 AM »
After watching a friend snap the paddle blade clean off about 2 miles from shore yesterday, I started thinking about backup paddles again. We were lucky to have very calm conditions, so he was able to make it back paddling with just the shaft at an impressive 2 -3 mph. With more wind or chop, especially farther from shore, I'm not sure how practical this would have been.

Does anyone carry a compact/inexpensive backup paddle on longer excursions or in rougher conditions that they could recommend?

Classifieds / SIC X-14 Pro for sale in Maine
« on: March 28, 2018, 06:00:03 PM »
I'm selling my 2015 SIC X-14 Pro. Got it new in September '15, paddled it for a year, then got a JL Sidewinder and haven't paddled the X-14 Pro more than a couple times since.

I've got some pictures up on the CL listing if you want to take a look at this beauty. Price on CL is $1500, but I'd take $1400 from a Zoner.  :)

I was amused to see this paid content from the American Petroleum Institute featured in the Washington Post online, taking credit for foil surfing.

Pretty slick site from these oil guys!  :D

NorthEast / Saturday: Final Casco Bay SUP race of the season
« on: August 25, 2017, 10:41:48 AM »
Lookin' for a good time?  :D

Come up to South Portland, Maine this Saturday for the final race of the Casco Bay Race Series season. It's free for anyone who hasn't participated yet this year and will feature a beautiful and challenging course around Cushing Island and/or nearby islands. No prize money, just friendly competition on the scenic Maine coast, followed by some great BBQ and beer with a fun group of paddlers. `

Hope to see you there!

Gear Talk / Sidewinder - Carbon or Signature construction?
« on: April 11, 2017, 11:12:03 AM »
Finally made up my mind to buy a Sidewinder 14' x 25" in Carbon construction, and of course that model is now back-ordered in Carbon for a couple months. :'(
Signature construction is currently available.

Anybody here tried this or other JL boards in both constructions? I'm interested in hearing how they compare and whether it's worth waiting for the Carbon one. I know the cost and weight difference, but how about performance, feel (stiffness/flex, etc), and durability?

Thanks!

Gear Talk / JP Australia Race Allwater?
« on: April 07, 2017, 07:18:17 AM »
Anybody tried the 2017 JP Australia Race Allwater?

Looks pretty sharp, and impressively light, even in the non-carbon construction. If anyone has tried one of these, I'd be very interested to hear how it handles relative to other "all-water" type race boards like AllStar, FX Pro, Sidewinder, Falcon, etc. Just looking at the specs, it's the lowest volume (269L @ 24.5") of the bunch at similar widths, but it's also the "thickest" at 8.8". Does that mean it's got a super-boofy nose?

I'd also be interested to know how JP's construction (carbon and biax glass) stacks up against some of these other brands that I hear more about on the Zone.

Thanks!

Classifieds / SIC X-14 Pro for sale in New Hampshire
« on: March 20, 2017, 05:41:36 PM »
I'm selling my 2015 SIC FX Pro. Got it new in September '15, paddled it for a year, selling it to make room for something more ocean/downwind-oriented. It's in very good condition, no dings, just a little chipped paint in one spot.

I'll post some pictures as soon as the snow melts, when I can finally get it out on the lawn. :D In the meantime, Here's a link to the SIC 2015 catalog (see p. 28).

Highlights of this board include:
  • 14' x 26", 253L
  • Tough and light SCC full-wrap carbon construction
  • Displacement nose, low-rocker, recessed deck
  • EZ-Grab handle (one of my favorite features of SIC boards!)

It's yours for $1700!  ;)

Gear Talk / SIC FX Pro vs JL Sidewinder?
« on: December 10, 2016, 07:42:01 PM »
Is there anybody here that's tried both the SIC FX Pro and the JL Sidewinder and can compare how the two feel and perform on the water? I got to demo the SIC FX Pro last summer on my usual ocean race course and really liked it. It's unlikely I'd get to demo a Sidewinder around here before buying one, so it'd be great to hear from anyone who's tried both boards.

Thanks!

NorthEast / Anybody surf today?
« on: January 24, 2016, 06:04:31 PM »
I drove up to Long Sands Beach in York, but it was a huge mess. Giant closeouts way outside, big waves undulating on the horizon, and crazy reflected waves and rip currents moving in every direction closer to shore. I watched a couple proners try to paddle out and saw them moving backwards with the currents while paddling full speed between waves. Went home and watched the debacle of a Patriots game instead.  :'(

Did anyone find a more manageable spot or brave the churning whitewater to surf the big swells today?
