Paddling is social isolation! This is me yesterday.

I have the older 5mm Boundary Boots. I've had them for years. I found 5mm isn't enough for really cold water, like sub 45 degrees. I also had an odd problem with them. My feet and calves would cramp up while wearing them for more than a couple of hours. I think it had something to do with the gel soles -- I don't really know for sure, but it was only those boots. They work well otherwise.

I hear you, but we already have 7 signups. It was only announced about three days ago, so I think we'll get a pretty good response. We have some good people promoting it. If we do this again plan on doing an October paddle.

There is a strong winter crew out here. We have to be.

I wanted to share a few pics of the course. We now have some vendors coming and will have buffet at the end of the event.

I bought my Kona windsurfer from him. Great board! Sad to see him go.

Events / Hudson River Paddle for Puerto Rico
« on: February 15, 2020, 07:20:44 AM »
Hi everybody, I am organizing a fundraising paddle on March 21 on the Hudson River. The purpose of the paddle is to raise funds for Angelitos de Amor Salon, Inc. This organization helps improve the lives of children with Down’s syndrome in Puerto Rico affected by the recent natural disasters. They typically would get funding from the Rincon Beach Boy race, but that was canceled because of the earthquake. We're trying to make up some of the slack. Funds raised will be split with HVH2O.

The location is Peekskill, NY. Race time is 10AM. (There's a tide we're working with.) There are three events to choose from, a 7.3 mile run to the Bear Mountain Bridge, a 3 mile sprint, and a 1 mile beginner paddle. Temperatures will be cold (water about 40ºF), so cold weather gear (wetsuit/drysuit) as well as leash and a worn PFD is mandatory.

I anybody is interested in coming and setting up a tent, please let me know. We have spaces for food and dealers.

Thank you for the feedback! I've been looking at the three brands and I think I like the Rhino Rack the best. They sell an aerodynamic rack that can support 165 lbs, which is more boards than I plan to carry!

Gear Talk / Roof Rack Comparison

Hey guys, my 12 year-old CRV just got hit with $4K worth of repair/maintenance and it's not worth fixing. Much as I'd love to get an electric surf vehicle, that just isn't in the budget right now, I'm looking at something used to haul me back and forth to work and carry my stuff.

I might have to get something with a bare roof and put on an aftermarket, clamp-on rack. I see Thule and Rhino seem to be the biggest roof rack brands. I know Thule is good and has been around forever, but they cost about $100 more than the Rhino. Are the Rhino's any worse than Thule? Does anyone have experience with Rhino or any other types of racks?

I wish other brands were that responsive. That is excellent service.

I've noticed with board bags that you need to spend a little. You can get low priced bags, but the zippers tend to tear, the handles tend to come off, and the material is fragile. FCS makes good bags, but they are pricey. I've had one for years, and it is pretty good.

I think Epic bags are a good compromise with durability and price. I have had an adjustable one for about 15 years, and it's still in pretty good shape. I replaced the zipper once, but that's not so bad. I bought a second one this year for my Bic 9'2". The quality isn't as good as my old one, but it's still okay. The picture has the old one on the left. The new model doesn't have the fin pocket or straps to adjust the length. Instead there's velcro inside which is only good for specific lengths.

Thank you. Those are good places to start.

We already have the launch itself. We just need storage. I found the architect who designed the beacon structure (https://www.architectmagazine.com/project-gallery/kayak-pavilion-for-long-dock-park). I guess I can just contact them about a new one? Again, I have no idea how to go about doing this.

SUP Advocacy / Need Help Estimating SUP/Kayak Rack

Hey everyone, my city of Peekskill just got a $10 million grant from NYS to develop the downtown and waterfront. I would love to have them build a permanent kayak/SUP rack and kiosk that my nonprofit would use and manage. I would like these to be lockable, preferably in cages, and roofed.

The problem is, I have no idea how much this would cost. The area is already zoned for this kind of project, so permissions aren't really an issue. I just need to let the city know how much I would ask for. Does anybody have any knowledge about this? I could use a little help in presenting this and estimating its cost.

I honestly think there's a good chance this will get approved. Since I started doing lessons at the waterfront, we have gotten some really good publicity and feedback from the community and local government.

There's a similar rack about 20 miles north of me which costs about $600K. This included solar panels, a fancy deck, and shoreline sculpturing, none of which I need. (Picture included.) I like the function of the cages and roof though.

Can anybody help a brother out?

Hey everyone, I'm organizing a costume paddle with my nonprfit HVH2O (www.hvh2o.org). The date is October 19, and the location is the Hudson River at the Peekskill waterfront. We'll gather at 4 PM and get ready for a 5PM paddle along the waterfront. The distance is a little under 2 miles. The water should be in the low 60s. At the end of the paddle, we will gather at a local watering hole for a party

Tickets are $20, and $25 if you want a drink at the watering hole. Here's the event link:

We can arrange transportation if you want to drop off your board then park at the recovery site. This will be a fundraiser for HVH2O, but we probably won't make a lot of money. It's more to have fun. It should be pretty silly!
