SUP General / Heres my New 8/10 Mini Super Dave..
« on: November 26, 2008, 03:13:25 PM »
Broke The original last Month, 8/10 by 27 by 4...Had my shaper, kind of rush another board...The new one is 8/9.. 27 by 4.. and has a lil less volume, less nose rocker..Still paddles OK i weigh 160 lb     I  think the blank  he used would not allow the exact same specs, Maybe my fault for wanting another one right away, Surfed it today in some solid overhead and a few feet.water still warm here at 47 degrees 5/4 no hood...                                                                         The board Worked well..Board came to me with 4.6 in thrusters,I need to go down to 3.6 in And change the fin to a six inch cut away..My Old 8/10 is frigging Amazing.. ..Took the origional out after 4 waves and surfed for a few hours got some great outside waves to Solid overhead n a half..Its been about three weeks since we have had any real surf ..more coming this weekend..
The old one was Broke in the top Middle of the board,I used cut deck padding,I first saw the technique on the STAND UP ZONE FORUM thanks guys !! Also had a stringer built into the new board..So far so good..Till the next session.. Dave

Fish Tales, Stand Up style / Fishing from SUP Saliditas Mexico
« on: November 24, 2008, 05:46:38 AM »
March O8 Saliditas Mexico,Road trip From Montauk New York..Two months of Great southern swell and great moments fishing..After the AM Surf sessions i would paddle my 9/6 Nature shape Sup out for some food.I had two extra leash plugs put in the board one two thirds up ,that held my fish stringer, and Rod tie down, the plug in the nose just had a string loop that i put the tip of my rod through,.Most fish caught to the south of Saliditas break..There is a few big rocks at the outside of the river mouth that holds bait and has good structure for the fish..You have to be carefull when theres a swell,While i fished there was usually a good swell,I caught lots of Jack Crevalle..The Jacks would always try and pull you into the break,I would have to put my rod into my mouth and lighten the drag and paddle out on my knees till i was out of the impact zone..The Jacks Made exellent Ceviche, they also fought like mad..Sliced thin Jack Cravalle, lemon or lime onions peppers celantro spices..MMMM sooo good..One day there was a load of bait busting at the river mouth..My first cast that day i hooked up a Cero Mackeral,I knew it was a good fish when it headed offshore. One local said my Cero were trophy size..Those of you that fish from Kayaks or SUPs Know the benifit of a fish heading out to sea you get a clear fighting chance at the fish no structure to screw you up on,..No problem getting hammered in the break, yes.!!!I caught Two beautiful Cero Mackeral that day and two Jacks..My rod was a custom Fenwick Fiberglass blank 12lb test ..light tackle.I had the rod for at least 15 yrs before i lost it,Yes i got caught inside and lost my beautiful spinning rod.And yes i had a few back up rods just in case but none as sweet as my lil spinning rod,.The best thing to bring to these places are 1/4 ounce white bucktails.Very light wire leader,Cero Macks will cut thru most mono leader material.I also caught many cool bottom fish on the bucktails.Small grouper Snapper etc..We also had fun catching The Needle fish..Deep fryed they were very edible..My dog Max liked them too.You must bring your own sushi stuff down..I brought Nori wasabi ginger etc..Lobster were also to be caught but you would need no swell for good visability.looking foward to this years road trip,I think it might be Cross country to Washington state then SUPing south tru Oregon and finally California..Will bring my bow and hunt Hogs in Cali...  Dave`

Drove to Mainland Mexico Late winter 08...Arrive to overhead and a half  Perfect Salaiditas..Surfed for Two days, On the Third day I Paddle Out on my 9/6 Nature Shape SUP.. Mid day waves amazing to a few feet overhead two people out..I have the Fantasy SUP session.400 yard lefts...No problems with the other people that were surfing actually they were friends of mine... Next Day Corky Carrol paddles up and says its no good to SUP here, the locals are complaining.......He doesent want SUP at saliditas...I say {now im going to spend two months here and dont want to piss anybody off} How about first thing in the morning?.. He says, Not a good idea..Hmmm..Waves are amazing four to five feet @ 14 seconds..Perfect Saladitas everybody catching lots of waves..I do the right thing and surf more than SUP but get to sneek in some fun sessions also SUPed some very large Corky Land its the break in front of Corkies house.. Two weeks into the trip I realalize that none of the locals were complaning..Actually Lordes {Daughter of the owner of Saladitas} asked to try my SUP..She paddles out and I on my Surf board...A few waves into the session Corkey paddled up to me and calles me THE NEW MELANOMA AT SALIDITAS...I have a few words with Corkey about this Nick name for me,He just changes the conversation to how he has a problem with SUP at saliditas..Lordes Loved the session on my SUP..  Two days Later JERRY LOPEZ pulls into Saliditas On his 8/11 SUP  yeeehhaaa i SUP with him Sunrise his first day..we ride a few waves together, actually he dropped in on me at will..more than a couple times..Was amazing to be on a wave with the man..  A few surfers paddle out..I go in to get my surf board..Sitting on the outside talking to Jerry About how Corkey had been busting my balls about SUP..He says just be cool... Jerry and i ride the next wave together He on his SUP me on my 9/6 Hansen Cardiff We do three cross overs all the way to the inside...What a great experiance to share waves with a Legend.. Jerry Lopez SUP surfed there for three more days... only on his SUP...The Day after Jerry left Mexico Im  on the beach getting ready to fish on my SUP I see Corkey walking over..I yell dont worry im going fishing...He walks over and says Im done police ing here you can do what ever you want..It took almost three weeks of doing the right thing at Saliditas..With a lil help from one of the best surfers in the world...I would not say that Saliditas is SUP friendly But i did get to SUP with out a problem after Jerry Left..Also caught some great fish there too... ..Aloha..... Gear Talk / Been Breaking My SUPS in big surf..
« on: October 30, 2008, 08:01:08 AM »
Have broken my 8/10 and 9/6 SuPs in the last two weeks here in Montauk...
Both boards are Nature Shapes Epoxy No stringers..We have been making them Light and high performace orientated,,Its time to Make em with stringers and heavier big wave type glass..These boards especially the 8/10 rip.I wont wave ride now on anything bigger than my 9/6..Am currently riding a C4 9/0 Bat tail.good board but not as fast or rippable as my Nature Shape boards... but even at team rider price of breaking boards every week or so is NOT COST Effective..   Were in the process of building me another 8/10... Besides stringers and heavier glass any tips on strengthining my SUPs for the future...Yes i know NO BOARD IS UNBREAKABLE IN BIG WAVES..but you guys are on the cutting edge of Performance SUP..any help appeciated..  Dave
