Sweet!  Great waves too from my standards in Great Lakes chop and slop.  Looks like a great board.  I have a hole in my quiver for something like this!

I guess I need to go find some patience........

The password for the almost 30-minute film came through shortly after I signed up for the newsletter.  I recommend checking it out!  It was cool to watch the bro-down of 10 top surfers and see them compliment one another and enjoy surfing.  Super cool stuff....

SUP General / Re: Home break

My home break is on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan - the middle section, a section of shoreline that has been called the Golden Crescent capped to the north by Little Sable Pt and Big Sable Pt.  A great spot for all kinds of paddling with lots of access, good downwind options and decent surf when solid north or south winds blow.

Gear Talk / Fin set to replace Lok Box Speed Dialer?
« on: October 21, 2016, 05:13:25 AM »
I'm hopeful to get some advice as I'm am working to find a suitable replacement for my Lok Box Speed Dialer fin set....of course the board has Lok Box boxes so I might be limited there.

I have this 10'x30" fish shape surf sup that I have really enjoyed here in the Great Lakes.  I am a bigger guy, 6'2, 215ish then add the neoprene.  Aside from the less buoyant freshwater conditions, our waves can be really choppy or mushy or maybe big and hollow but then closing out super quick.  This board has been fun in these conditions and I have enjoyed the feel.

So I somehow lost one of the fronts in a session last winter and I have been struggling to find a replacement that gives a decent feel.  Part of the issue are inconsistent waves that make a testing ground challenging.  I can't seem to find an actual Speed Dialer replacement set anywhere.  That would be my preference.

Seems like Surf Produce is handling all Lok Box items now.  I got a set of random fronts that they said might work but they were limited with what they had.

If anyone has familiarity with Lok Box options (or a box in the garage with a speed dialer front!)  I would appreciate any tips.

Isnt this the Glide V2?  If so, highly sought after in my mind.

I wish I lived in southern CA sometimes so I could try to paddle with and hang out with the speed freaks.

Gear Talk / Re: BlackBox Tekbox UNO 14 x 26.25
« on: March 06, 2016, 07:22:00 AM »
Nice to see you guys appreciating the Uno!  I have paddled every version of it, including the first prototype a few years back.  It is designed to be an all water board for a capable paddler and still be fast in the flatwater.  I feel it accomplishes that well but I still enjoy a dedicated downwind board for real swell.  I too am a heavier paddler 195-205 lbs and the 26.5 width suits me just fine.  The stock blue Larry Allison fin is great but the orange smaller fin is even better, I think, especially in flatwater.  Very much worth purchasing after the fact.  I know you can get them direct from Blkbox.

I also have a custom 14x26.5 Uno with a different style entry.  I don't have a handy pic of that but here is a 24.5 wide version...

I had missed this until now.  I was home sick yesterday and Chasing Mavericks was on TV.  I got all stupidly emotional at certain points...the heaviness of troubled childhood, importance of a mentor, need for family, innocence and brightness of youth focused the right way.  You are out there doing it and now he is too.  Much respect and admiration.

Rock on...

I guess it is good to be able to be stoked over nothing.  It is always better in the water.  It was a good day.  20+ mph winds, it is almost always peaky and jumbled, except for the point breaks along the northern waters and the UP.  For those without work constraints and gas money you will find our version of gold.  "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one your with."

Last Spring Morgan Hoesterey came into the area to follow a little surf crew around and I was in it for the day.  Super sub-par March conditions, shelf ice, big chunks like couches floating in the water.  Mushy, broken surf with no sections to connect.  Awesome, in other words.

I remember a passage from her story:  "That's when I realize that this is life for them; it's just what they do.  To me, it seems tough.  These guys are willing to do things that a lot of us wouldn't and they love it - all of it.  They're proud of where they live and they appreciate each time they get to take advantage of good weather.  My fingertips are frozen and each fall in the water hits me like a slap in the face.  But this time I stay out for more than three waves.  I feel like I owe it to them - to experience it like they do.  These guys have reminded me to be grateful for the damn journey."

I appreciated those thoughts.  I remember the first time I surfed Huntington Beach, and Hermosa.  I paddled out and turned around and was blown away by all the houses, stacked on top of each other.  The waves weren't good for the locals but I had a blast.  My shoreline is a little different.  Here's one from the article....five miles down the road from my house.  And then one that shows what peaky and jumbled really looks like around here.

We've got a great south swell happening today along Lake Michigan, along with unseasonable 50 degree temps.  I'm at my desk....gear in the car and ready to hit the beach at 3:30 pm for a couple of hours before dark.  This pic from a webcam of a break on Lake Michigan south of me plainly shows that it is on already!  For us Lake surfers these are nice waves!

What a blast it would be to be touring the coast and enjoying the surf with all those boards and all those people!  Great travelogue too!  I wish you continued good surf!
