Owning 4 boards already, I still need at least one more.

Love it.

I'm looking for something in the 9'6"X28" range. For me personally, that seems about right. I'm a bit heavier though at 220lbs.

Sounds like a mean little ripper for a man of your size!  What thickness are you considering?

My 2 cents says that full, boxy rails (especially when carried up towards the nose like on many of the current pop outs) really suffer in wind and chop.  Being able to submerge the upwind rail a bit and let chop pass over the deck smoothes things out a lot.

29 is mighty wide.  I would go 9'8, 27 3/4, 4 1/8.  Those are safety measurements at 200.  You already have a cruiser, so might as well let it rip.  Call up one of the great shapers here who have already shaped a bunch of shorter boards, and get started.  Keep us posted!

Well, all this talk of Spartans, Surfer Mag articles, and big surf, here is an archival shot by Jon Severson (founder of Surfer magazine, great artist / photographer).

is that kaanapali in front of leilani's??

Thats Pier One, with Backbone and outer Kanaha in the background.

The bottom one is Kahului harbor, inside the harbor, stood up and reeling.

Randy Royse sent over these two.  Pier One, and K Harbor.

We stopped and shot this on the way home from Kahului.  It had been head high, pouring, and 40-50 mph gusts stripping the tops off of the peaks two hours earlier.  The wind was too fierce for standup (granted, Laird did it in that vid last year), even when this was shot.  That size alone would not keep the more hard core stand up guys off of it.  On Monday, it was 4 times that big, and breaking way out to sea.  That might do it!

The Shape Shack / Re: wide point
« on: December 06, 2007, 11:58:33 AM »
Hey Boots,

The tail is 18, the nose is 16 and the wide point is 1 inch back of center.  The nose taper and kick are definitely borrowed (modified, of course) from shortboard design.  The idea was to keep the volume right where you need it and not overdo it on the nose or tail where it might work against you.  Bill cut a new rocker template for this shape, emphasizing a usable paddling spot, while not giving in to an overly flat rocker line.  The rails and fin placement got a lot of consideration as well.  The final shape is pretty unique.  If you find yourself on Maui, you are more than welcome to hop on when it is finished.

A lot of us have found that stand up has re-ignited our interest in surf sports where they may have plateaued or been waning a bit.  It seems to me that for the group of shapers that are out there doing this, the same has occurred for them on the shaping end.  It is a new intillectual challenge for them that borrows on the old but is, in a way, entirely fresh.  I had heard this about Al Merrick and Ron House, and for those who have spoken to Bill on the subject, it is unmistakeable.  Sandi Foote told me that he hardly sleeps any more, and she wakes up to noises in the shaping room in the middle of the night.

Nice!

Well after the rains stopped, the power came back on, and the roads were mostly cleared, and with the new swell just starting to show, it really did get beautiful (for an hour).

Sessions / Seacliff cruising
« on: December 02, 2007, 05:16:05 PM »
3 mile paddle today.  Tread lightly spots for sure.  Some of the finest seacliff cruising I have experienced.  Just us.  I would say avoid the waves for stand up.

From today:

the Kona Bouoy started popping off pretty good last night.  North shores should be solid today.  Light Konas, light Konas, light Konas, pleeeaaase.
