SUP General / Maui, Oahu, Tel Aviv?
« on: September 28, 2007, 06:04:57 PM »
Sure, everyone knows that Laird, Dave and the guys, initiated the rebirth of standup on Maui a few years back, but what of the older history.

Add to the root origins Tel Aviv.  Yoav sent over this picture and this note:

When you come to think of it, people have always paddled standing whenever they could.
This is a photo I shot in Tel Aviv showing the traditional lifeguards' paddleboard called 'Hassakeh. It's been in use since the first public beaches opened in Tel Aviv sometime around the first decades of the 20th century but I guess its origins are much older.
The reason for paddling it standing is to enable spotting the person in distress in the waves.
The 'Hassakeh is very wide - up to 5 ft so that the lifeguard can haul the rescued person on its deck and still be stable.
It has always been paddled with a very long double-blade paddle and it's not used for surfing.

Gear Talk / Flat, domed or concave?
« on: September 26, 2007, 08:14:51 AM »

It sounds good to me in theory, but I can't get used to flat decks (i tried one again a few days back).  Too many years using domes?  I had even considered trying a little concave for a bit, but abandoned.  What do you guys think?

SUP General / Some shots

Randy Royse is one of those guys with the patience to sit out a few wave to get some shots and videos of the action.  He emailed over a great series of photos of the Maui crowd today.  I have posted them to the gallery.

Here are a few:

The Shape Shack / Have you ever known...
« on: September 22, 2007, 11:09:24 AM »
That you shouldn't'a done something as soon as you did it?

Well that was the case when I downloaded the free software for the APS 3000 shaping machine (just to see what it looked like....).  Two days later, I have done almost nothing else.  The problem is, the software is really intuitive.  If you have some existing image program skills, you have already used all of the tools.  Yet, that does not a shaper make.

Here is my crack (version 306 B) at a new 8'4 (shaped at 8'6 to allow for some shrinkage).  I wanted to keep the volume right around the 116 of my current board.  If you download the AKU software, email me, and I will send you the .brd file that this software kicks out. That way you can view all of the slices which show rails and bottom shape, etc.  Better yet, maybe you can fix 'er up for me.

Warning: have coffee ready and no plans for the weekend.

The Shape Shack / Board Volume
« on: September 20, 2007, 09:24:48 AM »
We had talked about this a few months ago, but I wanted to revisit the subject with some new info.

Volume (maybe more than any other single spec) will tell you heaps about the usability of a board.  I had thought that the shaping software that many are using would give a true volume, and it turns out that this is the case (in both liters and beers-love it).

Check it out http://www.aps3000.com/software.php?p=overview

One of many screenshots they have posted:

I found out that my current 9'4 has a volume of 116 liters.  My weight plus the board weight, paddle weight and clothing is 92 (liters or kg-same number).  So 116 less 92 = 24kg.  That says my board will float an additional 53 lbs over what I am loading it with.

The end product floats me so that when I am standing still (not paddling) and parallel in paddling position the tail is under and my feet are about 1 cm above water level (so that a slight tilt in either direction gets them wet).  That feels about perfect right now.

Ask your shaper the volume of your board.  It is a great reference.

Note:
This will be the volume of the board as it comes out of the machine, so, if I understand the process correctly, you will lose some volume in hand finishing.  This is correct to the best of my knowledge, but let me know if I am talking through my arse.

I hope this is helpful

Gear Talk / 7'7 production model
« on: September 18, 2007, 08:12:53 AM »
It looks like the guys at gongsup will be the first to produce a sub 8' production SUP.  They have added a 7'7 and 8'10 to their site (both with footstraps).  http://www.gongsup.com/spip.php?rubrique2

...and a video of the little board in use:

These guys also seem to realize that airs will happen on stand up gear in the near future (although I have not yet seen a real boost documented).

Although it may work, I do not think that straps will be needed for airs, just a small and light enough board, the right throwing wave, and a bunch of speed.

To quote my nephew, "this is about to get good".

Gear Talk / Why so much fin on wave boards?
« on: September 17, 2007, 09:47:12 AM »
I have seen a bunch of new wave boards showing up on the beach with 9-10 inch center fins and 4-5 inch side bites.  What is up????

Am I missing something or are the shops setting these folks up?   Let me know the upside to packing that much fin for surfing.

Whew...just picked this up from Malama yesterday.  Unreal how nice this is.  Total respect for the craftmanship and...well...love that went in.  All that before it has even seen water...

SUP General / Seeing paddles
« on: September 12, 2007, 07:38:01 AM »
Alright, with all the talk of owning 4 and 5 boards, etc, I guess its alright to admit my addiction.  But seeing things is a bit extreme.  I am picturing paddles everywhere.  I go back and look at all of my old surf mags and there they are.  Anyone know a decent therapist?

The Shape Shack / Step Rail
« on: September 06, 2007, 05:35:33 PM »
Has anyone played with a step rail board yet?  I saw that Bonga Perkins' upcoming production will use one, but that is on a relatively large board.  The step rail seems like a great way to reduce length and width, keep the needed volume in place (paddle area), and allow for thin rails, nose, tail.  Works great in other watersports, so.....
