SUP General / Slater Trout Video
« on: February 25, 2008, 04:47:46 AM »
Shot this yesterday of Slater on the South Shore.  The last 2 weeks plus  of perfect north shore surf (thanks North Shore) left us for a day, and the south shore started getting a little bump.  Came with some light onshore wind and was small, but Slater can have fun in anything!   Props early on to Lighning Bolt Maui, Bill, Maui Rippers, and now C4 Waterman for sponsoring young talent in our sport.  Way to go!

To morph Potter Stewart's line a bit:

I am not sure exactly how to define bad etiquette, but I know it when I see it.  The drop in to shove mid-vid qualifies (ripping aside).

SUP General / Could it be...
« on: January 05, 2008, 08:47:03 AM »
Extended Forecast: Our local winds will remain light through most of the new week ahead, then perhaps become south to southwest ahead of a cold front arriving next weekend.

and

Our local winds will be getting lighter now, as a deep low pressure system NW of the islands pushes the high’s ridge down closer to the islands…gradually turning our winds light and variable to southeast later Sunday into Monday.

Man, has this been a windy stretch.  Lets hope this happens and we get some winter around here  :).

Today we had a little puka in the wind lashing we have been taking for a while (and that is supposed to return soon), and even though the swell was minor, we stayed out for almost 5 hours.  Man, I've got that post-sesh-all-natural-mind-chemical-cocktail in full swing.  Ahhhhhhh.

Hi All,

Clay Feeter emailed over to let us all know about their first issue, which will be coming out on March 1.

He noted:  ps. We print at same press as Surfer's Journal, and on identical paper stock BUT we are even more photo intensive....

Gear Talk / Foote Outer Reef Charger
« on: December 23, 2007, 06:34:20 AM »
The other Randy  :D just sent over some shots of his new 11' Foote "Down Wind / Gun (Outer Reef Charger)".  His note to the Zone:

"Aloha Guys,
Some pics of the outter reef gun Bill shaped for me.
Just came home from a downwind run with Bill and Ripper Joe.
No waves to catch but very happy with how it paddles. Got into plenty of small glides that are
normally kinda hard to catch, so I'm sure it will do great in better conditions.

Now I just need some waves for the second phase of testing."

SUP General / Halcyon Days
« on: December 16, 2007, 06:40:17 AM »
TM sent this over this morning,

"Today (Saturday) is the first of the Halcyon days, the fourteen days surrounding the winter solstice. The halcyon is a type of kingfisher that builds its nest on the surface of the ocean. According to Greek mythology, the bird charms the winds and waves so that seas remain unusually calm during its nesting season, a week before and after the solstice".

It has been since last Sunday since we had anything resembling calm winds, but the waves do seem to have been "charmed" into submission.  Someone needs to give this bird a talking to.

Sessions / Seacliff cruising

3 mile paddle today.  Tread lightly spots for sure.  Some of the finest seacliff cruising I have experienced.  Just us.  I would say avoid the waves for stand up.

From today:

Gear Talk / One more
« on: November 28, 2007, 07:52:55 AM »
Soooo, I was rapping with Bill Foote last week about shapes, big boards, little boards, guns etc, and it struck me how much thought and experimentation he has put into stand up.  I just checked out a 13 foot by 23.5 (I think) gun he did for Alan Cadiz and talked to RR about an 11 foot design that Bill had worked out for him specifically for longer downwind wave cruises, but with the empahsis being on the wave stops along the way, not the cruising.  Having some alternative things I wanted to check out myself, I asked, and Bill agreed to shape a board for me.  Bill has been into this since Laird offered him one of his boards to check out while he was out of town way back when, and looking at our local breaks (and around his place), he has shaped a ton of these things since then.  Cool to see.  In fact the place is filled with all kinds of wave-riders.  Koa tow in boards, old shool single fin shortboards, sailboards, choke longboards, funboards, etc.  But...back to the point, we inked out an 8'6, 4.5 thick, 27.5 wide, wide point just back, light concave mid to double in the tail, but flat rail to rail (no Vee anywhere), pulled nose squash tail, domed deck, thin as possible (considerning the thickness) rails, that should be way interesting to try.  I will snap off some shots of the blank as it progresses.

Should be a fun one provided the wind can behave itself.

Looks like a couple bigger ones are headed are way for the North shores.  Keep that wind down, and we may have some more fun on tap.
