+1 on the hood hate. Even surfing prone in Oregon, I'll usually only wear my hood until I get out through the shore pound, and then slide it off. Good for temperature regulation though when steaming in a 5/6. Amazing how comparatively effortless it makes paddling seem when you go somewhere warm enough to surf without rubber!

Probably the same show, but I work with a guy who was filming a guy with a wing suit flying over a bridge. He hit one of the suspension cables and... well, you can imagine the outcome.

Robert, Blue Planet, he's on this forum. I rented from him in November - awesome service.

I'm a gorge guy and don't live down there, but I'm a commercial pilot and fly the approach to runways 28 (280 degrees, to the west) all the time and I'm always amazed at how big the swell is, especially inside the SM bridge. Looks like choppy windsurfing, but could really be good downwinding for sure. Don't know how your tides work, but as far as wind, it looks like a straight shot all the way to Dumbarton. The wind direction is very consistent when it's from the west. Plus your never too far from shore if you get in trouble.

Yeah, the 5/4 might be ok for the waves when you're falling in occasionally, but you'll cook in it if you're doing any flat water. With temps in the upper 30's and 40's I've been using a 3/2 short sleeve with a long sleeve rash gaurd underneath and no gloves and 3 mil booties, and that is perfect for high cadence flat water. I'll carry a wool hat to adjust the body temp. I went out once in my 5/4 full suit and was miserably hot despite temps in the mid 30's. Have fun out there!

That looked like a lot of fun CS! Wish I could have gone out flailing around with you. That one time I paddled around Wells Island last month in my 6/5 was enough to convince me to never paddle in that thick of a suit again! You must have been miserable. Looks like there was some decent little swell despite the dams being pretty much shut down right now.

Great idea! I was an Air Force rescue pilot for 10 years flying HC-130's and was involved in many offshore rescue operations. I got out in '96, before the widespread use of gps locator beacons, but I learned a lot about what works and what doesn't for being quickly found in an emergency situation.
Sea dye, smoke, flares - almost completely useless.
Signal mirrors - Awesome for daylight! Can literally be seen for miles. They're small. Get one and learn to use it.
But of course nothing is better than these small plb's with the built in gps signal. Even in relatively warm water, you probably aren't going to last as long as you'd think. These are super cheap insurance if you are doing many offshore downwinder runs or even for shorter local stuff in cold water.

About a month ago on the Columbia on a rare sunny day with temps above 40 and glassy conditions. Nice day for a cruise!

Thanks for the great videos Robert, and thanks again for the great rental service when I was over there last November!

Wow, kiters, river skippers, canoes, prolly a few barges and gill nets to really make it interesting. Looks like fun Mr! Maybe I can get the GoPro mount on my board to somehow attach to the survey stake implanted in my leg to hold me upright. Not jealous or anything though

Yes, great point about the shallow water surfcowboy. If you are new to paddling shallow reef's, it might not be a bad idea to wear some reef booties or some sort of foot protection. Just the slightest brush off the bottom can land you with a foot full of urchin spines that will entertain you for months removing all the little bits. Fall flat like a starfish if it's really shallow and resist kicking to get back on your board. Despite that, enjoy all the turtles, sea life, reefs, etc, it's beautiful!

Agree. If you see Orca's nearby, it's probably unlikely there are big sharks in the vicinity. In my previous life as a wave sailor, we would occasionally see Orcas swimming up the river at the Florence jetty in Oregon, presumably following the salmon. I always thought that was a pretty cool and unique experience, and not the least bit concerning.

Ala Moana Beach Park has a large lagoon that is protected by a reef and is generally very calm. It's a popular area for swimmers though, so paddle with extra care. Very close to Waikiki.

Highly recommend Robert at Blue Planet in Honolulu. He set me up with a great board delivered to my hotel for a very reasonable price. Would definitely rent from them again.
