go to your local auto parts store and ask for "door trim".   I got enough to do 3-4 paddles for $12.95.  My local SUP retailer knew I wouldn't pay him $25 for one paddles' worth so he sent me away happy.

SUP General / Re: Virginia Beach Surfer Lawyers trying to ban SUP ?
« on: September 09, 2010, 09:38:44 AM »
Well, yeah kiters catch a lot of hostility when they buzz swimmers.  What seems like a reasonable margin of safety to a kiter doesn't to a swimmer.  This becomes a problem for windsurfers because a lot of people can't distinguish kiters from windsurfers and want to ban ALL windsports from the beaches.  For example, a recent newspaper article was headlines "Windsurfer Rescued by Coast Guard"  and the article went on about windsurfer, windsurfer, windsurfer   until the final sentence -the windsurfer was brought in by the Coast Guard and the kite was abandoned."

I of course don't know what's going on in Va Beach, everybody here seems to play quite nicely together, but I suspect it's what Freud would have called "paddle envy".

Gear Talk / Re: What a BUMMER!!!

  Condolences!

I had a sweet and sour experience with a paddle that broke after 6 months use.   I went to the retailer where i bought it and he was unavailable and didn't return phone calls.  I bought a new paddle from a different retailer who MIGHT return  my calls and   started an Email dialog with the manufacturer, Kialoa.  After I sent  pictures and proof of purchase, Kialoa agreed to replace it under warranty, in the interests of customer relations tho' they  didn't think the product was faulty.  I offered to pay the freight and they refused.  When the paddle arrived,  there was a copy of StandUp Magazine in the box!

BTW, I bought the replacement paddle using American Express, which doubles the manufacturer's warranty, and does not exclude sporting goods from that coverage.

Gear Talk / Re: Jimmy Styks vs. Hulakai SUP boards

My windsurfing buddy, Mr Destructo, just bought a JimmyStyk ostensibly for his wife and we're all  watching to see how  it holds up.  Usually, when he buys something for her he's the one who uses it.  I noticed on the Styk webpage there's a 30 day warranty, seems way shy of industry standards.

gurutc,
I imagine you're talking about Paul and his shop in Columbia.  Here's a clip of a guy on an old windsurfer he recycled to an SUP.  The minimalist aspects of this really interest me.

Part of the sport is seeing how little you can spend on  it.

You might want to contact  Chuck Harden in Augusta at  WhitecapWindsurfing.com

.  He's carrying a line of SUP's and does demo days.
