Downwind and Racing / Re: Board ideas
« on: June 20, 2012, 07:48:46 AM »
Try to  hook up with a bunch of racerheads and swap  boards back and forth.  I dunno where you are  but here outside of Charleston there are low key races on  Tuesday eves and Saturday AM.  Paddling with people who are doing what you want to do will get you tons of advice and demos.

I once questioned a bike's ownership at a pawnshop and was told how they checked  police reports in 3 states (SC GA NC) before buying items.  Maybe a year after purchase, I had the bike upside down and saw a sticker from Tennessee.  So file your police report and  we'll be on the lookout in the non-adjacent states.

'No, I put mine together yesterday with my wife's backup dryer, which I assume she replaced with a better one.  I really like the simplicity of using hot glue.  No failures or strength issues?  Is that off-the-shelf hot glue or some special weapons grade glue?
I kept the shaft at full length -I'm 5'9  - and went out in the ICW yesterday and it seemed fine.  Felt like I  struck the board a whole lot less, maybe light weight = less fatigue = cleaner stroke.  I'll be heading for what we call waves here in South Carolina later today, shaft still uncut.

I had to buy new pants after the first month of an hour or so every morning.  Plus  the exposure to  sun and salt water  has caused my buds to accuse me of bleaching my hair.  The funny  thing is I don't feel any dumber!

Naw, It conflicts with the Golden Nugget race http://www.halfmoonoutfitters.com/happenings.aspx#golden_nugget_sup_race in Charleston.
The Golden Isles are off Georgia, Jekyll Island, Sea Island, etc.

Overall I think it's fair to say most serious surfers, windsurfers, supers are cheap, we put our our money into gear, again as it should be.  Clothes, shoes etc. does not =performance in the water.  Nothing like a good score at a thrift shop, garage sail or swap meet.

I always thought part of the sport (Windsurfing and  now SUP)  was the search for quality gear at bargain prices.  I used to be a cheap bastard but now I find I'm not only fashionably frugal  but also enviromentally responsible.

Contact Chuck at http://www.whitecapwindsurfing.com/ .   He'll know if there's anybody closer than he is (Aiken or Augusta) and help you get started  any other way he can.  Good luck!

I had my 50 pound standard poodle out with me for the second time yesterday.  She's not that crazy about the ride but loves being loose on the sandbar.  She's ten years old  so new tricks and all that.  One of her predecessors used to go out windsurfing  with me on my 12 foot Bic.  The breed  were originally water retrievers so they're comfortable in the water.

Not shameful at all. Shameful would be denying something was wrong and making it worse.

After my meniscus was removed in '96, the surgeon said bike was good rehab but swimming was best.  Swimming didn't suit me as well as the bike but on occasion when I've had to do the Big Swim, the knee has felt GREAT the next few days.

    Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Re: How are you getting Primal?
« on: February 10, 2011, 09:39:13 AM »
There's documented reports of animals in the wild getting buzzed on fermented fruit - you can't get much more primal than that!
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=animals-like-to-get-drunk

And to answer linter - an occasional craft beer with dinner amounting to < 6 pack a month.  But after a race whatever cheap beer I can get my hands on!  That habit started with (foot) road races but converted nicely to SUP races.

I came back from a torn meniscus and ACL injury after ditching the prescribed PT because of logistics and started riding my bicycle every morning before work.  I don't remember how long it took but you'll know when you're ready for skiing or paddling.  I would guess ANY non-impact exercise like biking or swimming would work.  Good luck!

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Re: Costa Rica 2011 - where are you going?
« on: January 17, 2011, 07:48:56 AM »
I booked a flight  last night for Jan 23 - Feb 3 for my wife and myself.  .  No hard plans, lotsa questions.
She's been before on turtle expeditions, first time for me.   This is not a dedicated SUP/Windsurfing trip but a combined thaw out  and play trip. Some SUP, some tree-hugging.   We may include Lake Arenal.

Is a car  rental necessary?  She thinks we can hire a driver to go from A to
B. OR rent a 4 x 4  which seems to be priced at about 3  times the price of a regular car.   Public transportation seems non-existent.

Do we need a local GPS if we rent?

What is the cell-phone coverage?  I saw a post mentioning a CR cellphone.

     Thanks for your insights.
