Fish Tales, Stand Up style / Anchor recommendation
« on: November 30, 2021, 06:27:28 PM »
Hi All,
It’s Dungeness crab season here is the SF Bay Area and I’d like to use my SUP board to catch some. I went out here to drop some snares but the wind picked up making the process of setting and retrieving the snares a bit of a pain. Was wondering if anyone has experience with kayak anchors on a paddleboard? What size is effective to hold against a 10 mph wind?

Would it work well with Axis foils?

Thanks for the tips PonoBill and Surfcowboy! 6 months since I started this journey. Still learning to gybe. Got around once and it felt so strange to be switch foot just before I stalled and crashed. So much fun learning something new!

Update: So I took it back to the shop where I bought it and they looked at it and determined that it's likely the deck pad coming unglued. Apparently, that is not covered under warranty by Naish. The person at the shop called his sales rep at Naish to confirm. I was concerned that if I slit the pad to let the air out and fix it myself that I would void the warranty, but apparently not according to the sales rep. So, I used an Exacto and cut a tiny slit, and pushed all the air out. I have a piece of scrap wood and a 5-gallon bucket of water sitting on it now that will hopefully help the glue that's under there keep it in place. if not, I'll have to cut a bigger hole and put some adhesive in there. The shop did let me know that the pics of the bubble I sent would help document if the problem got much worse.

I have a Naish Hokua SUP that I have ridden for 8 years and never a problem with bubbles. This board is only a month old. I really like it and hope the deck pad doesn't become an issue.

I have the 3.8 and the 5.8. I really like how stable and light they are and how well they handle overpowered conditions. Very comfortable well placed handles.

Thanks, everyone. Now I am concerned that it might be a crack. Filing a warranty claim. Bummed because I've only had it on the water about 10 times.

I picked a new Naish Hover Ultra Carbon 125L about a month ago and a really like it. Today when I was about to get in the water at Coyote Point, I noticed a bubble had developed on the deck pad.  :( I know it wasn't there when I put it in the car and it's not a hot day. I live in HMB and it was 58F today and it was in the mid 60s at Coyote Point. I had it upside down in the rigging area so it wasn't in the sun when i pumped up my wing and put on my wetsuit. It was only upside down with the foil up in the rigging area for about 10 minutes or so.

Does anyone have advise on how to fix it? Any recommended repair videos?

The big Naish 2450 is the perfect foil for a big guy like you to learn with and wing size will depend on wind strength.. I’d say a 5-6m wing should work well in light winds and once the wind hits 20 knots a 4-4.5m will work for you..
btw the new Naish S26 wings have plenty of low end grunt..

I’m 6’3” and about 220 lbs and I’ve been using the new Naish S26 6.8m wing on light days.. This vid was from a few days ago.

Hey DavidJohn - great video. I have the same board and am about the same weight and height. What size foil did ride?

Hi,
I am new to wingfoiling and am just starting to getting the board up on foil. I had my first flight last Friday which was more than just the up and stall I had been doing for weeks. Only flew about 10 meters, but it was magical. I want more! However, to get flying, I had to put my front foot WAY far forward, in front of the front foot strap holes (i don't use straps) in order to keep the nose. It felt awkward. I am wondering if I have my foil set up incorrectly.  I weigh 205 lb/93kg and am 6'3"/190cm tall. Here is my gear:

2021 Naish Hover Glide Carbon 125L
2019 Slingshot FSUP Hover Infinity 84cm with 24" mast connected to the fuse in the B position.
5.8 PPC wing

My question is: How many of you using this foil are using it in the A position vs the B position? Should i move it to the A position for more stable flight? I have the foil connected to the board in the middle of the track. When I had it back further, I had a hard time getting up off the water because I had to have my back foot back so far I was snowplowing.

Any feedback and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Brook

Many thanks SanoSlatchSup and Pono Bill! Your answers address my two main concerns - accidentally punching a hole in my brand new board and parts seizing. I have a slingshot fsup foil mount plate so after more googling it sounds like m8 25mm will work but will definitely use PonoBill’s method to ensure they don’t poke through.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the quick response. This isn’t quite what I am looking for. I have an easy foiler board and want to attached a plate mount foil to it. What hardware do I need for connecting it to the tracks?

Hi,
Totally noobie question. I purchased a blue planet easy foiler, but can’t find anything online about what size hardware I need to mount my foil to it? M8 or M6? What length bolts?

Thanks for sharing. I am up in the bay area. From the description and from what I have learned on this thread, I think I need a wider board with more volume. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the the helpful advice! This is such a great forum!

Like GL mentioned, I don't want to struggle with the board either. My regular sup board is a 10' x30" x 4" Naish Hokua which is great in all conditions for my height and weight. From what I have read below, it seems the blue planet 8' or the Jimmy Lewis 7'11 would be a good fit. The board Max mentioned sounds interesting as well. Will need to look into that one too.

Thanks Supkailua for all the tips. I will definitely take it slow, start on the beach and then move to working on going upwind without the foil and then gradually work to get up on it.

Hi,
I am looking for a foil SUP to go with a duotone 5m foil wing and an 84cm sling wing foil I bought. I am 6'2', 205 pounds. I have no foiling experience, just 10 years of SUP experience. I would like to start with wingfoiling before venturing into the surf.

After speaking to a few knowledgable people about foiling, it sounds like I should buy a longer (7'6"+) and higher volume (160+) board to shorten the learning curve. Besides the Jimmy Lewis Flying V (7'11" 180L), what other boards fit this spec and have a plate mount for the foil?
