The pieces of the story are starting to come together.  For starters Haley was not a Seahawks fan, he bleeds red for the 49'ers, but he was put in the penalty box for this move on Tuesday, 3 days before the competition.  This was labelled 'Practice Day' and because of this he earned the #25 Jersey for the Seahawks.

Twiggy is shown here bottom turning with no where to go.  Twiggy proceeded to take a beating after this photo and then 2 more later of his own accord.  Then again Twiggy ended up winning.  So maybe this was just the type of medicine he needed.

. . .So I'm doing little crab cakes with lemon basil aoli, converting some sous vide beef shortribs  I did recently into Beef Polynesian, with some spicy sauce, mushrooms, little sweet peppers, tossed together and stuffed in grilled papayas. Got six different versions of Poke, a nice Caprese salad, and lots' of beer, rose, and sauvignon blanc.  . .

WHAT!  Next time I'm in town I'm coming over.  "Hello PonoBill, I'm Beasho.  Nice to meet you  ::)"

Please post photos so that we don't have to hunt.

I will add flavor to the adventure later.  Short story was that 3 SUP’s were the first out at Mavericks this competition morning.  This was before first light.  Dodging security and navigating by moonlight and Venus to get to the Peak.

The two local ‘thugs’ Ian and Haley threw down the gauntlet for the Super BOWL.  It was game on at 7am, with 7 points per wave, 3 points per wipeout.  Manning vs. Sherman

In the end Manning’s game was flawless.   Sherman went down hard with an injury and was taken out of the game.  Broncos win 28-17.

If video doesn’t load (it is updating).   If I don’t have pictures soon someone else will post them.

Manning had a few awesome takeoffs and Sherman’s final takedown was spectacular (he actually got stuffed by Jamie Mitchell).  Kai was watching from the channel on a jet ski.

PS: Surfline's "Rewind" function may be used for any debatable calls.

That's a pretty cool little '.Gif' How do you make one of those?

I assume its a video wrapped up in some way.  I usually think of a .gif as a picture not necessarily as a video.  Advise?

You seem to have relocated the camera at 2:05.. where to?

Chest mounted.  I typically paddle out with the GoPro on my chest and then switch to Paddle for better perspective after a few waves of warm up.

PS:  I just updated the ending of the video with another rider and some pretty stuff.  It typically takes Vimeo ~ 45 minutes to process the change if it doesn't work right away.  Please be patient.

. . . Worry about IUTR and it's little brother, SkyNet.

What is IUTR?  Nothing came up on a quick Google search.  Speaking of which Google is starting to manifest itself to be Skynet (not that I am anti-Google) but the likeness is developing.

SUP General / Farallon Dreams: New VIDEO!
« on: January 16, 2014, 08:47:11 AM »
I had not made a video in a while but the recent California swell encouraged me to get out the GoPro.  The party wave motivated the production.

Since Farallon Dreams was posted on Vimeo it is forever editable.  Any suggestion for improvement CAN, and MAY, be incorporated with the links intact.  Kind of like crowd sourced editing.

Enjoy  8)

PS: Please do watch this on a big screen in HD.  It will better represent the 1080P source and artistic intent.

1. Cesium 137 is not fissile material, it's a fission product. . . . fine article--pointless, but fine. Unless the point is to scare the crap out of people over nothing.

Thanks for this Pono.  I guess we can relax for a bit.

Beasho, what are the dims on that board you are riding?
10 ft Jeff Clark design.  This was one of his first generation of boards.  I remember him looking at me with big eyes and saying "Feel how light it is!"  It was roughly 19 lbs. at the time.

I was still dreaming of sailing this board and SUP'ing it so I had him build a mast track into the deck.  I only sailed it twice and learned that it was a waste of time to haul all the gear when I could just use a paddle, have more fun and catch more waves.  Thus the end of windsurfing.

4 months later I broke it in half.  When it broke I lost the front half on the inside reef at Mavericks.  I was so upset, having just broken my first and only SUP, that I almost left without looking for it.  Then I found it floating with a purple tuft of Seaweed sticking out from the Starboard bow (see the white patch above orange arrow).

It has since been buckled, dinged, roughed up and glassed over more times than I want to count.  5lbs heavier and many thousands of waves later it is still my Go-To board for anything from 7 - 15 feet especially if there is wind.  It is like The Little Engine That Could.  It paddles great and should inspire anyone who has been warned that when a board breaks in two its dead.  NOT SO!

I'll send you the 99 cents for a track on itunes if you want.

PS:  I have found that iTunes does NOT translate well into video.  Too many copyright restrictions.  But if you buy from Amazon for 99 cents you can port the soundtrack into your digital editing software.  I am a Windows guy so I can't be sure if the problem exists with a MAC/Apple.

For a guy in your 30's you seem to be ripping it up pretty well.

With regards to the video I was prepared to complain about editing but you actually just got the highlights.  Great job.  It wasn't too raw and was fun to watch.  I liked when you smacked the lip.

I have gravitated to filming in 1080P mode all the time.  Your video had a good bit of fish eye suggesting you were probably in 720 or less.  The 1080P mode distorts less and allows you to take pretty cool stills out of the footage.  Gigabytes are cheap these days so you might as well film in the highest resolution possible and pare it down later if necessary.

I appreciate how much time the filming and subsequent editing take.  I use MPEG Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com/) to immediately cut down the footage and re-save it at the same resolution with a stack ranked naming convention like:

065 Decent Takeoff good fall at end GOPR1992.mp4

Then when I come back weeks or months later I can just chose the highest ranked pieces of footage from multiple days aka the 090, 080, 070 . . .

This ultimately leads to an uber montage, assuming you add a 99 cent soundtrack, that will elevate your work to the ranks of Videos that Don't Suck appreciated more than the hearty few who get a twinge of jealously at the combination of plate glass, 35 degree water, waist high peelers and 7mm of rubber.

And a few more.

The GoPro still reigns supreme.  If not for video then for 1080P giving you the option of 30 frames per second.

Looking forward to 4K.

PS: I am only posting this here because it was quite a chore to swing a paddle with the GoPro, I took the 2nd worse beating of the winter, no one else cares and you guys will keep this all a secret  ;)
