Random / Professor of Happiness
« on: November 15, 2022, 09:58:11 AM »
A great and data intensive analysis on Happiness from the "Harvard Business School Professor of Happiness."    :o

Good news for the older people out there.  Maybe everyone on this forum is 'older'.

In simple terms it may come down to whether

1) You are glass half full or glass half empty
2) You can transition from Field to Crystalline Intelligence

This is very good.  Enjoy!

Foil SUP / Downwind Foil Videos
« on: November 05, 2022, 08:40:38 AM »
There was SUP, then SUP Foil, Prone Foil, Winging and now Downwinding.

Here are some videos to get you excited about the latest installment of Extreme sport.

This video should be watched on a large screen.  We have to hand it to #1 Kai Lenny (with Alex Aguerra), Dave Kalama, Jeremy Riggs and the Hawaiians for inventing the sport.  Then comes James Casey who is pushing downwinding to the masses and the rest of the world.

He might say "You too can downwind in 15 knots on a Lake or Fjord in your own back yard."

This video is bad-ass.  Best watched on a big screen:

I have been spending time away from California is small, clean New England surf.  Typical conditions are 3 feet @ 7 seconds.

Here I am the California guy going out all the time, often alone, but slowly motivating the locals to get out in the #TooSmallToFoil surf.

Last year I was experimenting with the GoFoil M280 in 1 foot surf.  It gets up amazingly early and easy, but is slow and 'muddy.'  This year I have been using the Axis 1099 with 68 cm Mast and now the 300P (30 cm) tail.

What I have discovered is that I can propel myself with paddle power alone.  The established SUP technique displayed by Derek Hama was Pump, pump, Paddle.  However the flutter introduced by this method may be less efficient than maintaining the foil's constant angle of attack, using the paddle power alone.

This video shows my approach a couple weeks ago.  I have been working more recently to keep the foil flying high and paddling FAST while minimizing the required pumps.

I bought and finally used my Axis 105 cm mast, 41 inches, for Winging.

The benefits were:

1) You will never breach - Since you were likely used to shorter masts

2) You can comfortably go faster.  This is related to #1 because regardless of the chop size you can blast through without fear of faceplant.  This will likely be beneficial in more open ocean situations.

3) You can point upwind higher.  Your 'fin' is longer and/or you can heel the board further to windward meaning you can use the foil to generate lift rather than just the mast.

Downside is weight, drag and increased stability.  However you could potentially use smaller tails due to the increased stability of the longer mast.

You also need to go deeper to get clear.  105 cm is pretty long.

OTHER EXPERIENCES?

Classifieds / Wanted Kenalu Mana
« on: March 03, 2022, 09:41:15 AM »
Does anyone have a Kenalu Mana that they don't want or would sell?

I will take JUST the head, or the full paddle, if you want to get rid of the whole rig.

Thanks - Beasho

Classifieds / Wanted: Duotone Echo 4.0
« on: December 09, 2021, 03:37:25 PM »
Does anyone have a Duotone Echo in decent shape they would be willing to part with?

I have been trying to get newer wings but JUST need a 4.0.  Prefer the Generation 2.0 aka Echo vs. the version 1.

I have a boom so wing only.  4.0 not used much around here but when its needed it is better to have it than muscle around on a 5.0

I have several sessions on the ART 999 but as Jeff Clark says “You will know immediately.”

I have been a GoFoil guy since day #1.  Started in Spring 2017.  The only foils available were GoFoil Kai, Naish and some Kitefoils that didn’t work in the waves.

I bought the Axis 999, rather the whole kit, to serve as a Wing-Ding foil only.  I can report that this is a fantastic BIG WAVE Foil

I have had the foil out in 5 to 7 foot waves on my 6 foot SUP, then recently out in 8 ft @ 14 seconds on my 7’ 4” Big-Wave SUP foil board.  Legit 10 to 12 foot faces on the inside of Mavericks.

The foil catches waves almost as well as my GL210, which I can pump up on a 3 foot wave, but is fast and STAYS Down as well as my GoFoil GL130.  It catches small waves better than the NL190 and is Faster.

BUT – The pumping is clearly better than any of them.  This foil makes big wave SUP’ing feel similar to Prone Foiling – Catch the Chip and go hunt for waves.  I only had 45 minutes before sunset.  I got this crumbling beast that turned into a clean 12 footer and then flew through blackhand reef, into the open ocean to the pinnacles.  Dodging rocks along the way.  688 yards! in my backyard.

Foil SUP / Axis Tuttle Doo-Dad Fitting
« on: October 21, 2021, 09:24:41 PM »
The AXIS foil system for use with Aluminum Mast and Tuttle Box requires 2 adapters:

1) A male Tuttle insert that has a post

2) A streamlined Base with FLAT bottom

When the male Tuttle is fully inserted into my current board the TOP of the adapter sits ~ 1/8" below the Carbon bottom of the board.  IF I were to tighten the Male Adapter all the way to the Mast Base.

The Tuttle Inserted into the board looks like this WITHOUT the Mast Adapter

Random / Lost Paddle Matunuck Rhode Island - KeNalu Mana
« on: August 18, 2021, 01:36:43 PM »
I believe I left my paddle at 'Ocean Mist' in Matunuck Rhode Island August 6th.

It should have had my name on it (Denton Chase) and phone number.

It's a semi-long shot but I thought I would post to see if any Zoner's may know if someone found it.

KeNalu Mana. Many, many repairs on the blade, looked like this.

It also had a broken shaft that was repaired.  It had served me well but if by some feat of luck it is found let me know.

Thanks - Beasho

Foil SUP / The Foil Diet - Lose Some Weight and Try Harder
« on: July 20, 2021, 06:17:42 PM »
I'm too big and too old to do that.

Well then try harder!

Thanks Piros for the motivation.  I haven't lost the weight but I am taking off on nothing and getting multiple waves.

Here's an example of taking off on flat.  Slight push by the first wave and up on the next.

Classifieds / Wanted GoPro MAX
« on: June 28, 2021, 07:05:52 AM »
The GoPro Max is hard to love, but when it works its very good.

My GoPro Max FRIED its brain while charging the battery internally.  LCD got cooked.  Jeff Clark had the same problem with his Max.

If anyone has a working GoPro Max that they would be willing to sell please let me know.  Please make sure it is in working order (aka Wifi works, no scratches . . ) essentially a GoPro Max sitting and collecting dust.

Thank you - Beasho

Foil SUP / Extreme Foiling when #TooSmallToFoil then Go Foil
« on: June 11, 2021, 02:08:14 PM »
I am currently on the US East Coast, Connecticut, and surf Foil when possible.

Things have been FLAT, FLAT, FLAT.  UNTIL last weekend.  I showed up on Saturday and there were 6 Foilers at the local spot in Rhode Island.  2 of us on SUP's and 4 prone guys.  It was a refreshing 4 to (maybe) 6 feet.  I was riding my Go Foil GL210.

I started surf foiling here 3 years ago and was regularly the only foiler out.  There was one other person foiling in 2018 Paul M.

The next day I paddle out and the size was down.  3 to 4.5 feet but with regularity.  You can't beat 3.5 feet at 5 seconds.  Again riding the GL 210.  On a Sunday in New England and I am the ONLY foiler with 3 longboarders.

The next day it gets smaller.  I put on the GoFoil M280.  GoFoils largest wing.  Before I know it I am foiling and foiling and foiling and flying every day.  No matter how small.  2 feet @ 4 seconds.  BRING IT!

If there is ANY whitewater, visible at a distance, I know I can get up and FLY.  Set waves on Wednesday were shin to knee high.

And yet I am hooting as I takeoff on nothing and rip down the line.  TOO MUCH FUN!!!!!!

Conditions look like this.  I am 100% alone in these conditions.

So I found this great spot with Huge Waves and I went and Winged it and no body is on it EVER!

HDip gives me grief but I am outing the Wing spot called "Mavericks"

Had an adventure downwinder.  Wind was blowing Northwest 10 - 25.  Took my Bike to the point #1 and launched a 5.0.  Was powered pretty quickly and winged in and around Mavericks and Blackhand reefs.  Out to the Green can.

Buoys were 13feet @ 12 seconds aka NOT small.  I am still figuring things out so riding waves regular foot on port was very SPICY.  Not my strong side I am goofy foot.  Then I raced down the Jetty wall (that single run was 1.6 miles), downwinded to Miramar beach and walked home to my house.

I doubt this will become a popular attraction but there was plenty of space.  Having surfed this point for 10+ years, 1,000's of times I have never seen the water as deep blue as it was by the Green can.  I was all alone it was spooky and fun.

I was wondering if people have had experience with Tails that are Flat vs. Vertical and how that may help go upwind.

In other words any Dihedral or Anhedral angle creates a vertical planform (shadow) that effectively acts like a tailfin.  Alternately some flip tip tails, like the GoFoil, have vertical tips.

Would this Vertical Planform area help go upwind better because it's acting like a Vertical Fin at the tail end of the fuselage?  More to push against and drive upwind.

I have graduated from the Harbor to the Ocean.  35 sessions of experience.

A month ago I went back to my favorite windsurfing spot and started to wing there.  The wind is typically 20 mph powered to fully powered 5.0.

Part of me thinks "Take your medicine and figure it out."  The other part realizes 'be humble a--holee . . . and ask for some advice.'  So here I am.

This weekend was big . . . no it was huge. I surf foiled in the morning and it was 12 feet @ 10 seconds.  But this is just average 'big' when surf foiling.  When I got to the wing sailing spot the channel closed out and I thought 'man that only happens when it is enormous.'  But I ignored it and went out anyways.  Turned out the buoys had picked up to 16 feet at 15 seconds.  WTF!

Regardless the size wasn't so much the issue as foot transitions and sailing with the wave.

I am goofy foot.  Wind blows Northwest so I am coming towards shore either:

1) Crack head stance - Toe Side - Goofy foot (comfortable)

2) Heel side sailing on port regular stance (Getting better)

Winging is MUCH, much slower than foil surfing at least at my stage.  The challenge comes when I am regular foot, uncomfortable, flying with the waves.  To stay with the wave energy requires pointing downwind and picking up moocho speed.  Regular stance I am just not comfortable flying fast.  Example 15 mph (fast) vs 23 mph (very fast).

Then I realized Just Learn to Surf Regular stance.  I thought 'Why not just start foiling in regular stance until I am as good as goofy, or close enough, not to care?'

I would otherwise try to sail WAY, WAY upwind and then try to downwind with the wave goofy foot but I can't make any good upwind progress when I am toe side (Crack-Head stance).

Here is an example of my longest ride.  Staying in the Goofy stance for several minutes.  Not making ANY upwind progress, but this is better than I have been doing which was to just fade downwind.
