Foil SUP / Re: Starting with SUPfoiling or prone?
« on: July 26, 2021, 10:06:56 AM »
I agree with everyone here and would highly encourage learning to SUP first. When your friend works it down to good proficiency on an 8' SUP then they'll be ready for a foil. Please start out with a good kayaking helmet, impact vest, and I even wore a football cup. Why is an impact vest important? Because they're relatively cheap, got mine for $30 at Big5 and it saved me plenty of times. The day I thought I was good enough not to wear it though, I cracked a rib on a relatively benign fall... Also ask Califoilia, one of the best guys at SanO, about his three days in the hospital with a collapsed lung from a blow to the chest. Speaking of falls, this sport is like judo, if your know how to fall correctly you will be fine. Don't try to salvage a sketchy ride or things will get ugly and that's when injuries take place.

Foil SUP / Re: Switch to Prone (Pros/Cons)
« on: May 03, 2021, 10:10:36 PM »
I keep threatening to give the prone game a real shot and planned to get into it this spring/summer, then Fluffy showed back up this week. She's still 12' and a little rounder in the middle since last summer, but aren't we all. She kept lurking at Nukes all afternoon today and gave me a nice big fat profile view in the face of a set wave that came my way. I know statistically we are more likely to be killed by bees or lightening than a shark, but I bet she doesn't know that.

Foil SUP / Re: Learning to foil surf - catching waves
« on: June 17, 2020, 09:17:07 PM »
What's the wait like these days on weekends if you're there mid am?

There will be 30 cars in line by mid morning on the weekend. Gotta be in line by 5:30 to get a good parking spot at Dog Patch. Mid week is pretty much ok anytime unless there's swell on and then it gets nuts again.  We've all taken the ebike route: Park at trail 1 and ride in like you own the place. Biking in  has taken all the stress out of what had turned into a pretty stressful event. Too many times I have turned around and gone home angry due to 30 cars lined up covered in wavestorms and beat down longboards that were pulled out of the garage rafters for the latest swell.

One question, when or if I do get in the air and feel myself getting too high, should I fight the idea to bail and instead go heavy on the front foot?

The way to think about it is not to put "weight" on the front foot but to shift your center of gravity forward, or back, as necessary. Keep your upper body centered over your hips, and move your core fore and aft parallel to the deck. Otherwise a teeter totter oscillation starts and you either breech and go over the handlebars, or wheelie out the back and never catch the wave.
Hope that helps.
Come down to SanO, its a perfect spot to learn. It rarely if ever gets hollow, catching whitewater is always good because it reforms in the middle into fun waves again, and when your dial up the confidence, Nukes can get big and juicy with 3 to 400 yard to yard rides.

Foil SUP / Re: Zoner injured on foil sup.
« on: June 17, 2020, 11:42:08 AM »
It was a freak accident in the shore break. He tried to shove his board through a pop up/backwash shorebreak and the board flew up the swell but flipped back at him, rolled right, and sent the tail end of the fuselage into his chest. The shore break can get pretty nasty at SanO down at Nukes. Even if you think you've timed it right it can jump up and bite you. My problem is usually getting out of the water. I've taken to throwing my paddle at the shore so I can use two hands to get my board out, fetching the paddle later up on the sand. I've dinged more boards just getting out of the water than anywhere else.

Happy to report that Dave was discharged yesterday after 5 nights in the hospital, and according to his wife he has been resting comfortably at home. His right lung collapsed by 50% on the beach due to the blunt force blow from the tail of the fuselage. It seems that half the regular foil crew at SanO are retired fire paramedics, including Dave, so he was in good hands. There was even had an ER physician, who happened to be foiling that afternoon on a rare day off, paddle in and check him out on the beach. Many thanks to the lifeguards who were right on it and helped immensely with coordinating the emergency response effort and getting Dave's gear loaded up. We had all parked at trail 1 and biked in, and we couldn't have made it happen without the lifeguards and their awesome help in shuttling us around.   Only real glitch was the ambulance got stuck in the sand and took 3 hours to dig out. Fire Paramedics gave him a ride to the local ER in their rig so only harm done there was to the ego of the ambulance driver. At the ER, the vent tube was in fact inserted too far and served to puncture his lung which required arthroscopic thoracic surgery, adding an unfortunate complication to the matter. All is as well as can be now and we were forced to cancel the memorial paddle out this weekend. All those who had dibs on his sweet surf van are unfortunately out of luck as are the cheap skates who were eyeing his new Kings board and GL set up. Hopefully he'll have a speedy recovery and be out shredding in no time. Get well soon brother.

Foil SUP / Re: Covid 19: Now what?
« on: April 01, 2020, 11:21:15 PM »
Well I'll just come out and say it but that was 20 minutes of Deepak Chopra level woo-woo nonsense having nothing to do with the real and existential threat that we are all living under at the moment. I'm not living in fear either, but in reality...
The waves will always be there, and with a good dose of common sense and patience, we will all be there to paddle out again together when this mess is over. For me that means following the advice of the epidiomological experts. The latest CDC prediction is that 25% of coronavirus carriers are asymptomatic, if that's me I don't want to put anyone else at risk, and I don't want to be near anyone that might put me and my family in jeopardy. You're not stuck at home, you're safe at home. Anne Frank and her family hid out for two years, I think we can hang out for a fraction of that in our comfortable homes. I'm, helping my kids with their homework, completing some much needed ding repair and equipment maintenance that I have been putting off for too long, binge watching some shows during the day instead of falling asleep half way through one at 9:30, plowing through that shelf of books I've always been meaning to get to, learning a new lick on the guitar or another song on the piano other than Linus and Lucy that my family has heard 9,000 times, learning some new tricks on the jump rope, knocking out max push ups and max jump squats every hour on the hour, drinking too many beers with lunch and taking a nap in the backyard and missing my push up plan, cooking leisurely dinners with the family and getting a good night's sleep.
I was in a bit of denial when this kicked off, but by the end of this weekend we will be in the midst of a million cases world wide, and 50,000 deaths, and we're not nearly over the hump.
The waves are going to be there when this is over, be smart, be patient and make sure you will be there too.

Foil SUP / Re: My new Armstrong Foils
« on: January 30, 2020, 08:57:28 PM »
Was stoked on my Armstrong. I'm on a 6.0 board with the 1600 wing, 72 cm mast, 60 cm fuselage, and 232 stab.
I watched the Armstrong video posted above and took note of the shim discussion.
I shimmed out the stab approximately 2 degrees nose down with a couple stainless washers, to direct the front wing up and it made a world of difference, total game changer. Now I'm even more stoked.
The waves at SanO can be fairly mushy but this minor tweak made even the mush super fun. The best way to describe it is as if there is one of those Swiss exercise balls under the nose of the board: it doesn't want to breach, but it doesn't want to fall off either. Rides just levitate along like a magic carpet ride as long as there is the least little push.

That drone pilot needs to get his $h!t together and watch what he's doing!

(And btw, I now have adopted the technique of taking a good look at the lineup before I start flying backwards and will not go below 7 feet.)
