Cool Dragon, I've been out a few times this year at Lincoln, but mostly try to hit Laurelton (less crowded)  - I'll keep you informed and hope to see you out there before then.  Any local shops carrying a selection of boards yet??

Events / NY Area - Board swap / Demo Day??
« on: April 12, 2009, 05:00:49 PM »
Hey- All NY area riders.....anyone want to coordinate a Demo / Swap Day for SUP boards / paddles etc....I would love to try some different boards  to see where I want to spend my money next.  Does anyone else like the idea of getting something together where we could all see what everyone else is riding and try it for ourselves to see what else is out there?  Being that there are so few of us in the Northeast, maybe it's a good idea......I talked to a bunch of my buddies and we would all be interested in getting something together.....perhaps if we can plan it far enough in advance and get enough people talking about it, we could get some manufacturers involved as well ( hint, hint PSH.......).  Please give me your feedback so we can make this a worthwhile event for all of us......Initial discussion on location is Long Beach, Long Island......, maybe in June??

I like those guys at Jupiter Kiteshop as well, Jeremy and John really took care of me on a recent trip down there, rented me a Yolo for a really good rate for a long weekend.  Had a great time paddling the IC and surfing it as well.  Thanks guys!

SUP General / Calories Burned on SUP ??
« on: April 02, 2009, 01:37:42 PM »
Hey Everyone, just had a quick question regarding fitness / SUP.....anyone have a HR monitor that they have been using to track their calorie burn while on SUP?  I have been flat water paddling when I can't get down to the ocean and was curious if anyone has some stats they would like to share that may be relevant....I am 32 yrs old and weigh 238.  I have been doing a 5.2 mile loop in appx 1:30 and was just curious if there was anyway to put a # on that.  Thx!

Tamarindo or Jaco probably your best best for SUP rental, In fact that Tamarindo was the only place in the whole country that I saw one being used (and there was only 1), and I was there for a month in Feb 08.

Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA - awesome !!  They also have a 120 minute IPA, but it's 10 bucks a bottle - haven't tried it yet.

I stayed at Ponchos in February and had a great time.  As I said it is close enough to the beach - but not on it.  The paddle around the point would be awesome and there is a little peak that is sometimes surfable that you would have all to yourself because it is a long paddle out on a surfboard that nobody wants to make (N side of the point, in front of Nosara Beach Hotel - Playa Pelada)

Ponchos was great - super clean, new rooms (up on the hill).  Great restaurant (mexican).  Supermarket on site, surfshop on site, the pool is by far the best in Nosara.  Family run.  Steve, the owner is a shaper from way back - and really nice guy.  The hotel is not the cheapest (appx $80/ night).  In my opinion though, especially if travelling w/ wife / kids - it is the way to go.  Hope this helps.

Just wondering what the general experience has been traveling w/ SUP boards.  Iknow w/ my 10' longboard, for the most part nobody cared that it was longer / heavier than most boards - they just charged me the extra charge and sent me on my way.  Has this been what you have found w/ SUP also - or do they scrutinize a little more based on the much bigger size??  Thanks

Gear Talk / Re: Isle SUP???

Haven't seen or tried the boards yet.... I was considering them for a long time.  They seems like they move alot of boards so I'm sure someone will have experience w/ them.  I spoke directly w/ Mark @ Isle, he was very helpful and informed and was indicating that they were going to be putting together a pkg deal at the end of May to be around $1000.  I don't know exactly what was included in the package.

I ended up going w/ the Southpoint Kalama based on a few factors......:

- I was able to rent the Kalama locally for a weekend, getting a chance to actually ride it  before I bought it, which was a big plus for me (fear of committing to something I've never seen or used).

- By the time you add-on deck pad (150), shipping (200), and paddle (300), the cost is only slightly cheaper than the Kalama package, so for me it wasn't worth it.

So hopefully there will be some more experience w/ the Isles out there - I am curious, like you said, because the price is so great.

All depends what you want - as you know Grande was a very uncrowded break.  You probably know to go to Tamarindo if you want nightlife and Gringos (and get robbed).  Nosara and Samara are nice but getting more crowded.  My wife and I stayed at Poncho's in Nosara.  It was a 3 min walk to the beach, then a nice 10 minute paddle around the point to get to Guiones (main surf break).  SUP possibilities abound in Nosara since everyone only surfs the main break - but there are plenty others !!

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Re: Costa Rica - Samara
« on: June 03, 2008, 05:53:08 PM »
Whoever is thinking about it - go now !!  Costa Rica is slowly but surely become a much more mainstream destination.  I have been going there for about 10 years now and each year gets a little further and further from the place I knew on the first trip.  The unspoiled spots are getting harder to find.  Nosara and Samara are still OK, but much more crowded in the lineup.  My last trip to Nosara in Feb, I counted 75+ in the lineup for a sunset session (waist high +).  Get it while you can !!

Technique / Re: Turning while surfing a wave??
« on: June 03, 2008, 04:05:13 AM »
Thanks Guys, I am using the Kalama 11'6" and it seems that slowly but surely I am able to get it to respond a little better.  Would you recommend tri fin or single?  I know there is a thread about this but how about in knee / waist high waves specifically?  Which setup would be the best?  Also w/ a single fin, how big should it be for the size of the board?  I think it comes w/ a 9" fin - do I need more?

Gear Talk / Gluing Handle on Paddle?
« on: June 02, 2008, 03:15:56 AM »
Hello all, I have a question regarding attching the hand on my paddle permanently.  I was told to leave it unglued because that will allow you to drain water out of the paddle.  The problem w/ that obviously is that it will come off eventually, and it's annoying to have to mess w/ it all the time.  It seems like where the shaft meets the blade is sealed, so I'm guessing that where the handle meets the shaft is the only place that water is getting in as it's not a tight seal.

What would the recommendation be for sealing that connection as well as gluing it so it doesn't move?  Is there one product I can use for both?  Does anyone else have a problem w/ water getting in the paddle?  I was thinking that I could also drill 2 small drain holes in the handle of the paddle if this does not solve my problem.  Any thoughts?? Thanks-
