Board shape and design are distinctly different than build quality..... it may be a great design, once you get it in the water you'll know, but it looks like the build quality isn't there....bummer.. hopefully you can make the repairs and be good to go....  keep us updated!!

SUP General / Re: Buy Billabong for a dollar
« on: August 27, 2013, 07:02:56 PM »
Went to a Billabong store somewhere by Fair Haven NJ last week....it seemed pretty busy for not being right "on the water"...even as busy as it was, I was wondering how they are keeping afloat.....  apparently they are not...  they had a ton of salespeople constantly asking if I needed help which was annoying, but I was shocked by the amount of merchandise they had....shirts, shoes, hats, sandals, etc, etc, etc...  I can't see them moving that amount of inventory in 5 years....  maybe thats the recipe for disaster...overstaffed and over stocked w/ inventory?  I did manage to buy a $5 chapstick though ::)..... (it was waterman's, it's OK) :-\

Thanks DW - I'll give it a try...what would be the best way to approach apple about a replacement do you think? It's a little over a month old...

Make Genius Bar appointment online and visit the Apple store. Just tell them the battery life seems worse than it should be. They can check it out.

They might ask if you've done a wipe and restore. That's always the first to-do item they ask about.

Thanks DW...

I like the fact that it has an integrated battery built in. As we all know how fast the battery drains on a 4. Not sure of the 5; but I am hoping the 5S would be released soon.

Battery life is pretty bad on the 5... recently switched over from the 4 and it's much worse....good thing is, I'm usually close to a charger (car or home) so battery life not as critical for me

SUP Gear Reviews / Newly Acquired / On Order / Re: Board Bag Reviews
« on: August 05, 2013, 04:49:02 PM »
I bought a Midnight Bag a year or two ago.... in general, excellent bag.  Reasonable price (I think I paid 270 for mine w/ a number of additional features)...  Well padded, great fit, nice looking bag.....I would only mention that there were a few things that stood out to me as things that could be improved:

-Hardware on the shoulder strap was made of cheap plastic that bent and broke from the weight of the board...  pretty much just threw it away immediately...

-Zippers seemed a little inferior quality wise...still holding up OK, but seem a little flimsy

-customer service... while good, it wasn't great.  I ordered the bag a few weeks before a trip and was told that they couldn't guarantee that it would get there in time... I offered to pay additional to have it "rushed" so I could be sure I'd get it....Could they send me the tracking #?....No....is there anything I could do to make sure I get it in time?...."you should be OK, but we can't guarantee it".... In the end, got it 2 days before I left so all good.

I know, I know - I'm such a New Yorker....wanting everything yesterday....

Would I buy from Midnight Products again?  Absolutely, but I'll be sure to order well in advance so I don't loose sleep over it....

I know there are some posts here and there regarding board bags....  let start something thats all in one place.  I'll be buying another custom bag for a trip this winter.  What bags do you love, which ones don't you love?

I find that you get used to whatever handle you have.  Even if you don't like it at first, you'll get used to it and start enjoying some aspect thats different than what you were used to....  I went with the classic T on my last KeNalu and didn't love it at first, but now I love the control and precision compared to the ErgoT....

Technique / Re: calm water drills to help with ocean chop
« on: August 01, 2013, 04:42:48 AM »
I think that more than  anything else, learning to move around on your board is a skill you can learn in flatwater that translates to any other circumstance. Both shuffling and cross step. Learning to keep your weight towards the middle of the board, and moving back and forth without rocking the board--all good.

One of the best and most challenging drills that I try to do as often as I can on my 14' in flatwater when I'm just playing around on a leisure paddle is : switch stance cross-stepping up and down the board

I'm totally uncomfortable doing it and its crazy hard to do correctly....  give it a try

Looks to me, like it's de-laminating in that area, likely a defect unless you aren't using the air vent on it properly (if it has a manual one)....  similar thing happened with one of my Naish boards a few years ago.  It's such a bummer when something like this happens to a brand new board....They (Jim K) warrantied it and I got a replacement without to much hassle....

Gear Talk / Re: Ke Nalu Question
« on: July 31, 2013, 04:33:03 AM »
I don't think there should be a problem, as long as you can get the pieces to fit together somehow, which may require some work.  You'll obviously then have to epoxy the QB handle on the KeNalu shaft instead of being able to hot-glue it as you would normally do w/ a KeNalu handle....

Better wait for the experts to chime in...
