Mother nature was too kind on that run.  Mauiwebcam wind graph shows a steady 25 to 30 mph wind, with gusts nipping at 40 mph.  The direction was flawless, lots of east.  You would have absolutely slayed that course today Mike.  Randy, Chan and Tracey certainly did.  A real kick in the pants for me too.  Great fun.

Racing specific 12-6 and under in with the surfboards.

Additionally:  If the paddlers last name begins with R, they must wear a helmet cam, provide a running commentary and post it to the web.   :)

+1

Additionally: Rudders on 14's.  Bolt 'em on race day if promoter sees fit.

I'm here on Maui, and agree with the recomendations given already.  But I just have to vote Kauai.  If you are interested in beaches, consider looking to the older islands - Oahu and Kauai.  I wish I could help with advice on where to stay on Kauai, but it has been 10 years since my last visit.

I have a feeling Stuey's boards are going to win a lot of races.

Word on the grapevine is that our old f-16's are just as fast as the fancy pants customs - given the right conditions of course.  Rumor has it that Kai Bartlet (of oc-1 fame) recently hopped on an f-16 and clocked a 1:10 - maliko to the harbor.
(Granted, it's heresay, but I'll do anything to stir the pot on my favorite SUP topic).

Nice looking board Randy.  Another beautiful form following function from the gang at S.I.C.

Is is just me or does the nose of that board resemble this handsome gentleman?

Tracy, Randino can be counted on for 3 things on a downwinder; a smile, a skirt and an ankle leash strapped around his bony calf.  :)

I hope you can do a downwinder with us one weekend, they are a hoot.

It is also important to remember that large boards will grow as they heat up.  A snug strap on a cool board (right out of the water) will become piano string tight as the sun heats the board.  Well padded racks are cheap insurance for our expensive boards.

Shawn,
Not being of naval decent what's da flags say?

The flags piqued my interest, so I looked it up on google,

"Three flag signals are for points on the compass, relative bearings, standard times, verbs, punctuation, also general code and decode signals"

Shawn's first flag is the letter S, which means "Engines going astern"

second is U, "You are standing into danger"

third is P, "About to sail"

Good stuff.

Sorry to hear about the loss.  I'll be watching for the board.  The powder blue always caught my eye.   Matte white finish on the bottom was also very distinctive.  As I recall it was signed by Mark on the bottom.  Hope it turns up soon.   :(

^ I only have a few pics of the board, here is one of the bow.  As I'm sure you know, all the f-18's are custom foam.  This is an early prototype.  If you want the real skinny on a big board talk to Mark.  That being said,  I'm really happy with this board.  I like the primer gray - very stealthy.  It may go white someday - to reflect heat.

^Right place, right time.  Kudos on the new board, guaranteed speed with that machine.  Set up your GPS to train for the perfect heart rate - find the perfect line, and you will be time trialing like Lance Armstrong at the Tour.  My question is, where you gonna get some shoulders like Mr. Kalama?

I may be slogging along behind on one of these, but next spring...  Here is Mr. Cadiz, relaxed and dry.

Yes indeed, Randy loves the discussion of the finer points of downwind board construction.  It's getting to the point of making the top racers nervous; they see Randy's truck roll in and they throw a sheet over their stuff!  I think he is on a quest to bust a 1:15 at next years maliko race.  I'm sure he will deny it here, but take it from me, that boy is on a mission.

Hey Randy, I'll give you a hundred bucks for first right of refusal on that 17 footer.  I've got a funny feeling you may want to upgrade in a few months!  C'mon dude you were riding a freaking vortice when I let you use my f-16.... you owe me one!     bwwaahaahaa!

Oh, and thanks for introducing me to maliko, that raised my fitness and happiness a ton.  What a fun challenge that is.  Some co-workers ask "Why do you work all day and then paddle, ain't you tired?'  My reply, "Yeah, but I'm doing  maliko runs this weekend, it's gonna be windy and I don't want to drown."

So lucky we live Maui.

^ I stand corrected.  The first f-18 was designed for flat water.  I'm guessing the f-18 dave used to win maliko this year was specifically designed for that run.  Bottom line is that they really are fun boards, flat or downwind.

^ Water start means you start in the water, not on the beach.  They will probably string you out in a straight line, standing up, between a couple of jet skis or boats and blast a horn.  Then the fun begins.  If you want to be absolutely sure, just call the promoter.  Have a great race and have fun!

Don't worry about practice times, there are too many variables.  Stroke length is highly personal.  Some feel better with longer, some shorter.  Try not to pull too far behind you, the blade angle will begin to pull you downward.  If you pull yourself down, your drag increases.  Just practice as much as you can, you will feel what works best for you.
