I have yet to watch the entire thing, but the first part looked interesting.
Maui has a lot of alternatives to mainstream food.
I'm sure grateful for that.

From Mike's facebook, probably the first one. Not sure how he makes them, but I'm guessing they will be light, durable and fast.

142 paddlers yesterday. 70 oc's and 9 ski's on the long course, 38 oc's, 15 sup's and 4 paddleboards on the short. Breakdown of boats: 81 oc-1's, 15 oc-2's, 9 ski's, 3 rudderless. Wonderful eye candy all lined up on the beach. MCKC will post pics later in the week, I'll add some to the thread. The pre-race meeting let us know about the uneven start in last weeks race. It seems some of us lined up too far out and had a significant head start to the first bouy. So that's how I made it to the first bouy in the top ten... Yesterday's start was much different. I'd never started in such a tight bunch before. A bonus is riding the wake of the stronger paddlers before they pull away. It's quite a significant wave, easy to sit in. But they gradually separate, the pack spreads and the workload goes way up. About a half mile into the race a rudderless boat got cut off, spun and huli'd by the aggro pack. The rudderless paddler is a junior, and very fast. I sneaked around the six stopped boats by a whisker. The short course started after us, which was great because we ended up on the second half of the course together. It was fun encouraging others as they passed in the other direction. I remember paddling standup a few years ago when Raaphorst (in an oc) shouted out some kind words. It helped a bunch. I don't care who you are, Sup's on that course are murder. There were decent micro glides if one decided to give a little extra effort. So very much to learn in the oc's. Very elegant sport. The good paddlers are so fluid and appear to be relaxed and floating along... Full results here: http://www.mauicanoeandkayak.org/pdf/2011LeilanisTriPaddleMaui_RaceResults.pdf

Should be epic viewing. I'm anxious to see Tahiti's team Shell. They should be astonishing in an unlimited oc-6. http://www.olamaurace.com/

The Na Kai Ewalu canoe club is hosting a Maliko to the harbor race tomorrow. 6 man, oc-1, standup, surfski - divisions for everyone.
Registration is from 8 to 9. Fee is $25. OC-6's start at 9:15, the rest at 9:30.
Hope to see some 'zoners there.

Seventeen years ago, when Mark was about 17, he arrived at this building with a pair of pliers and a few dollars in his pocket. Today, dozens of his friends helped him dismantle his shop and move it up to Haiilimaili. When I heard they were moving, my heart sank. Good times at this building - first SUP, first downwind board - now it's all going away. I realized today that it was the people that made this shop special. The old magic will endure, just in another location. The new shop is almost as cool as the old building behind Costco. It's one of a pair of big quonset huts overlooking the north shore. It was an honor to help such friendly and talented people. The king is dead, long live the king!

Here’s a new F-16. It’s a custom, 16’ x 27” x 6”. I asked Mark to build it as light as possible. It tipped the scale at 25 pounds. Spectra loops for the paddle - leash, gore-tex vents fore and aft. Love the pointy nose. The carbon rectangle under the pedal is thin and slippery. The carbon bits for the cable entry into the board are slick. Little rubber doughnuts keep the adjustment nuts snug. Works like a charm. Primer gray, with a single coat of clear gloss urethane on the deck and rails. It's still glossy in these pics, but I've wet-sanded it (1500) to a satin finish. The satin finish has more grip and is easy to fix. This one is fragile and will get extra tender lovin’ care. I’ve yet to get it out to maliko, but it feels great so far.

The wind was really good this weekend. I've been using my oc-1 lately, gradually recovering from a minor shoulder tweak. Paddling standup and canoe at the same time is a monster. Word to the wise, if you are considering paddling canoe (highly recommended), go easy. Although you may not notice a strain during a run, you may be sorry a few days later. I sure was. Two weeks off the water sucks - and I was lucky. Surf ninja has set me up with some indian clubs to help balance out my shoulders. I'm very close to 50 now and need to get ready for old age. Anyhow, I posted this here rather than random in the hope that others might chime in with fun runs. Canoes are sneaky fast at maliko. The scorpius is really rocking my world. Did a 1:06 Saturday, a 1:05 Sunday and a 1:00:37 today. Mother nature was really shoving us in the back. Airport windspeed was indicating about 28 average gusting up to 40. Big thanks to Randy for turning me to the darker side. It's going to be a great summer.

Jeebus these guys are haulin the mail.
To paraphrase Hemingway, 'there are only 3 true sports in the world, bullfighting, mountain climbing and motor racing, the rest are just games'.
I didn't see the race, but apparently this happened on the last lap. Everyone lived.

Hope those that do it have a great time. Sounds like a great event. The SUP's go first this year, then the oc's. The Standup race ends with a 300 yd run on the sand. :'( I'm going to try running this week to see if I remember how. Basketball and tennis were former obsessions, but it's been such a long time.. If running hurts too much, I may have to pass on the Standup and maybe do the canoe. I'll paddle to exhaustion, fall out a dozen times and post a crummy time, but it's all in fun. http://www.olukai.com/OlukaiHoolaulea.aspx
