The Shape Shack / Re: CUSTUM PADDLES ??????
« on: September 23, 2013, 08:17:30 AM »
i have made a few shafts with the braided sleeves from solarcomposites.they came out pretty good but not that stiff.i used a pvc tube sprayed with silicone ,then wrapped painter palstic around that ,then more spray.taped it in place so it didn`t side off then put  2 layers of sleeving on ,wet it out then put on the shrink tube they sell .then start in the middle and work out to  the ends with a heat gun.the tricky part is getting the pvc out before it totally sets up, then cut the sleeving off when it totally drys.the problem is this can get expensive.i just got some carbon tow from them and ran strips of it lengthwise up a shaft i made ,simialr to what nlchawaii does.that really stiffened up the shaft.now i`m going to try wrapped glass, then carbon tow like pictured in this thread.i tried weaving the tow to make a blade but couldn`t get it right, thats why i asked.

hey nic i know this is an old post but i just got around to trying some carbon tow.i`m trying to figure out how you "weave" the strands.do you wet it out first and go over under every strand?

i made one from three different pieces.i got 3 blanks that were preshaped and they came packed with the extra foam from the cut outs and another softer piece.they were sandwhiched in between the blanks to protect them during shipping.i put the soft one in the middle and the others top and bottom.glued them with gorilla glue then hotwire,no problem.great way to recycle

i have a 9`10" sumo.i have it in mexico and bought it from hobie sports in newport beach about 2 years ago.i had a freind of mine pick it up and bring it down for me.it was still wrapped up in the shipping foam.anyway the bottom was delaminated by time i got it.the guys at the shop said they would exchange it for another but trying to get it back to cali and backdown was not fesible.anyway i had a local board maker fix some of the delam and it works fine.very stable and an all around fun board.it has a thick midsection called a disc and then steps down in the nose and tail.also steps down into the rails.it sounds like just what your looking for.i didn`t know it at the time i bought it that it was a chinese popout.,but i probably would have bought it anyway.i have other boards but i use this one the most it`s alot of fun.

nice job.i don`t think anyone is laughing at your skills and i definately learned something ,like leaving the middle glass up on the deck and pulling it down last.a couple of questions.how much resin did you use?when you say you flipped the board over when the bootm was still tacky ,did it leave and imprints from the rack on the bottom?thanks for sharing and teaching.
