kenalu mana 82 with xtuf shaft (not the "s" shaft, which os stiffer)

just right for me with bad shoulders--only surf tho, so no idea for other use

i occasionally try others, and it reinforces how much i like this exact config

never tried a hippostick, tho
You are so right! Thanks a lot!
Here is what I posted somewhere else:
I ended up getting a Ke Nalu and I have to say it is an awesome paddle. Much much better that anything I have used in the past. Not to name names, but I have had a lot of paddles. Originally I was thinking that I would not get a Ke Nalu, because I did not want to mess with hot glue. Then a few people mentioned how great Ke Nalu paddles are. I am glad I took the plunge. The feel of the blade is beyond awesome. (Manu 82 sq inch). The xTuf shaft feels just right to me. Not too flexible at all and I glad I did not get the xTufS, which is stiffer. The handle is nice. The overall feel of the paddle is really beyond what I thought possible. I felt like I was surfing a smaller board than I actually was, because the paddle just makes everything feel nimble and responsive.
I really appreciate all the people who pushed me toward Ke Nalu. I feel pretty confident that it is a lot better than the V-drive or really any other paddle, including the hippostick. Learning how to hot glue is totally worth it.

Gear Talk / What length is your surf paddle?
« on: November 04, 2018, 05:34:11 AM »
I am interested in getting some statistics about what length of paddle people actually use for SUP surfing. I thinking that one could reference that to height and try to get a sense of the average difference between height a paddle length in practice, as well as the standard deviation. Is it a Bell-type curve; or does it maybe have two bumps (normal and Laird length)?  Let's see. Could be fun and maybe interesting. Please indicate your height and your paddle length(s), and maybe contextualize that with what board(s) you are riding as well. Thanks.

Thanks Bill. It is $50, which seems reasonable. Seems like a good option for me since I am uncertain about paddle length. What would you recommend in terms of blade size and shaft? I am thinking maybe the Mana 77"" and the xTuf handle (small blade, flexible handle), or maybe I should go a bit bigger, like 82"". What do you think??

(I weigh 160 lbs and I am about 5'11".  I am almost 70 years old.)

Yes i meant Mana and Hydro blades on Kenalu shafts.
So are they totally compatible?
Also, the blade I see on the Black Project site is a Surge. Is that related to what you suggest?

Thanks a lot Stoneaxe. This is really helpful!!! I replied on the other post.

Oh, I see maybe. Is the Hydro a blade from Black Project? Is it perhaps even better than the Mana (KeNalu) for me?  I am thinking about an 82 sq inch area, but maybe I should consider going even smaller? I weigh 160 lbs.

I use both Mana (Kenalu) and Hydro (Black Project) shafts hot glued to Xtuf(S) shafts. Best combination to preserve shoulders without having a noodle in your hands.
Thanks Luc.
I am not sure what you mean about a Hydro shaft hot glued to an Xtuf shaft. What you suggest sounds really good for me (for shoulder protection), but what parts are you suggesting I get and how are they arranged?

Thanks Stone and Bill.
So is there a trade-off with regard to getting the extended ergo T handle instead of the regular handle? Is it heavier or does it change the flex profile?

Dwight:  I looked at Black Project. Looks good. How is the flex in the shaft on the surge?

Thanks APPST. I realize you are correct. My problem is I want to get a lighter paddle now, and I am not what length to get exactly. (Like how much shorter to go.) With a Ke Nalu, can I change the length every week by unglueing and cutting until it seems right? Is that a realistic thing to do?

42
Thanks for the replies.
With the Ke Nalu, if I started out with a length of 78" for the paddle, would I later be able to unglue it and reduce the length to 77.5"?  Is that something you can do? Can you reduce it by small amounts until it feels dialed in and just right? Can you also buy something if you decide you want it longer again?

For the Ke Nalu, if you reduce the length, what are the difficult steps?  Is it difficult to cut it straight? Is it difficult to cut just a small amount, like 1/2"? Is the unglueing or gluing back together tricky? How do you make sure it doesn't leak?

Gear Talk / Hippostick or Ke Nalu: who makes better paddles for surfing?
« on: November 02, 2018, 01:40:40 PM »
I have been looking at paddles to use for SUP surfing. Two that kind of stand out to me are the Hippostick blur, designed specifically for surfing, and Ke Nalu. Any thoughts on how they compare? Shaft flexibility is important to me to limit shoulder strain. Also, light weight.

Thanks everybody. I just got back to this, sorry about the delay. I am actually thinking about the hippostick blur at this point. 82 sq inches, I believe, designed for surfing. Anybody have any thoughts on the Blur Pro? Is the shaft flexy?  I would like a flexible shaft to diminish shoulder strain.

Also, here is a weird thing. I am 5'10.5", that is, 70.5" tall, and my current paddle, which feels right to me, is 79.5". (I actually dialed in on this length using a Kialoa with an adjustable T-top.)  Is that crazy that my preferred paddle length is so long? Maybe I need to revisit that? (I want to be sure before I spend $400.)

PS. I ride a pretty long board, 10' infinity new deal.

Thanks. So like a Mana 82 or something? Do you like their ergo T handle? What about shaft?

Is that more of a race paddle or a surf paddle?
