Classifieds / 12'6" Jimmy Lewis Downwinder
« on: September 08, 2017, 04:29:04 PM »
I would like to sell my two year old 12'6" Jimmy Lewis down wind board. It is in Santa Cruz and in excellent condition. I'd like to get around $1200. I like the board fine, just I have stopped doing any down winding. It is called an M12.6, I believe (like the M14 only not as long). It is 28" wide. It is red. It surfs great and paddles fast.  nice glide. (I bought it new from Monterey Bay Kayaks for about $2200). For sale for $1200 obo. Used about 20 times (and not at all in the last year.)

Technique / How to breath before a hold-down and between waves.
« on: June 27, 2017, 10:16:56 AM »
I would love to get some advice on good breathing techniques to use to prepare for a hold-down when you can see it coming. Also, how to breath between waves during a sequence when you just have a short time before the next wave comes. I realized recently that even when I have some time before the first wave of a hold-down, I am not sure how to best use that, i.e., what breathing technique to use, or how to learn that. Any advice is much appreciated.

SUP General / Helmet for SUP surfing: what is a good choice?
« on: November 18, 2015, 05:40:34 PM »
Regular user here. (no brand associations.)  I am planning to get helmet for SUP surfing. The ones I am aware of are Gath helmets, which are pretty well known surf helmets (i have used them before), and the Sweet Protection Strutter. The Strutter seems like it would be pretty nice, but I have only seen it online. What others should I consider?  Additionally, I was concerned that with the Sweet Strutter, could the water catch that bill in front when you are diving under wave or wiping out? Could that strain your neck or am I concerned about nothing? I guess it has been used a lot in the whitewater/ river community?

Downwind and Racing / A good fanny pack for downwinding.
« on: July 27, 2015, 01:32:29 PM »
I wonder if someone can recommend a good fanny pack for downwinding. Somewhat rough conditions, Central California coast and I do fall at least a few times. What works well for that? Is a fanny pack or a small backpack better? I am thinking of something small, just big enough to carry a PLB in a plastic bag and maybe an energy bar or phone.

Boards:  Jimmy Lewis M12'6 ...

I was thinking about getting a Jimmy Lewis M-12'6. Mostly for ocean cruising, maybe an occasional downwind run in moderate conditions. Also some fooling around in small surf now and then. I would love to here anyone's thoughts regarding that. I wonder how much trade-off there is, how much you loose by dropping down in size from a "traditional" 14 foot board to a somewhat shorter 12'6?

Can any one weigh in on the essence of the difference between the:
1) Glide (Naish)
2) M14 (Jimmy Lewis)
3) Shaka (Angulo)
4) The comparable Starboard 14' downwinder
5) other boards in the same class
(all 14'...)

I am thinking particularly of the new Glide (27.5"), which I have demo'd and liked, and I think Angulo has a new Shaka (has anyone tried that?)
Thanks.

Downwind and Racing / Has any one tried a Tiger Shaka (Angulo)?
« on: March 15, 2012, 08:29:00 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has tried a Tiger Shaka, and where that fits in to the spectrum?  Is it a pure flatwater race board, or does it have some open ocean or downwind capability as well?

Downwind and Racing / Advice on a good upwind/downwind board
« on: March 09, 2012, 09:31:53 AM »
I'm looking for board to paddle upwind, downwind and all around, mostly in the open ocean off the Central California coast. I would almost always be starting and finishing at the same point. One of my key considerations, to make things interesting and scenic, is: how far can I get up the coast?  I'm wondering how much difference the board makes in that regard? Suppose I can get 4 miles up the coast in one board, in particular conditions and with my paddling ability, how much further would I be able to get in another board? How much does that vary? How much further would I be able to get with the board in 14 foot class as compared to a 12'6"?

A secondary, but also important consideration is: what would the board be like coming back, downwind, in different conditions?

My weight is 165 lbs (75 kg), about 5'10" and I like to paddle at a moderately slow cadence. I am a little over 60 years old. I would say I am an okay paddler, pretty good form, not that strong. My background is surfing and I am pretty new (2 years) to the SUP world.

Typically the conditions I would go out in my include the following:
very light wind, very modest chop,
moderate wind (5 knots), moderate chop,
moderately heavy winds (5-12 knots, more chop,...
In each case the swell might be absent, small, moderate or large. Typically I would be paddling into the chop and short-period swell, not across it.

Some of the boards I've been thinking of are various Naish and Starboard 14 footers, the Jimmy Lewis M14, Angulo Shaka/Tiger Shaka, maybe a Morelli and Melvin and I guess there are lots of others I should learn about. I really appreciate any advice or comments anyone has on this. I figure this must be a common problem. Also, I'm hoping to keep the board weight low, around 20 pounds, for ease of carrying the board from my truck to the water, which can be far. Mostly I think my trips would be about 90 minute upwind and 30 minutes or so coming back. Key considerations for me, I guess, are the distance I can cover (going upwind), the stability and ease of paddling, how it feels; and the fun and feel of the board on the downwind leg also. Does that make sense? What other things should I be considering?  Any advice, thoughts, feedback  and recommendations are most welcome and appreciated. I'm wondering, if a person is not racing, just paddling, alone, how much further does one get depending on the board?

Technique / Paddle use when surfing
« on: July 08, 2011, 07:22:17 PM »
I noticed that in this picture of Ekolu Kalama going backside, his paddle is behind his body trailing in the wave.  I wondered if this is the standard way to utilize one's paddle when surfing backside, or if the across the front of the body, torso slightly twisted approach is more common. What are the advantages of each approach in terms of, e.g., safety, balance, leverage and edging, etc.

Most of my SUP wave riding experience is front-side and I have noticed how much it does for my balance, edging and speed as i learn to use the paddle. I was hoping for some advice that would help me get off on the righ foot, so to speak, for back-side SUP surfing.

Technique / Practicing your stroke in front of a mirror.
« on: February 20, 2011, 08:48:05 PM »
I am trying to learn Tahitian and was thinking of practicing indoors.maybe standing on a bosu or something in front of a mirror?  Any advice?
(of course my paddle is too long. Maybe I could make something from PVC or get a broken paddle or something?  People must have tried this. What have you come up with? Thanks.

Technique / Proning in out of the impact zone: how to do it?
« on: February 19, 2011, 07:43:51 PM »
I am wondering about the situation where you are caught in the impact zone, for example after a smaller set wave followed by several larger waves, and you would like to catch a wave (white water) prone to get to a reform area or to the beach.

How does one catch a wave prone on a sup board?  How would you hold your paddle? Is this dangerous or tricky? I am asking about the situation of fairly powerful whitewater, to big for me to catch standing up, and particularly concerned about the paddle causing problems or losing the paddle in the process. Does that make sense? Advice appreciated.

Gear Talk / Starboard Brush Carbon Boards
« on: January 16, 2011, 08:19:54 PM »
What do you think of the Starboard brush carbon boards?  Is there such a thing as too light (for some circumstances)?  How about the shapes, etc..

For example, the pro/gun (10'3", 29", 4.3") and the element (9'8", 30", 4.3") are perhaps comparable to the icon and/or performer, but would be presumably a couple pounds lighter than the pure construction Corebans. Does that seem like an appropriate comparison?  How do you think those boards would tend to differ, or be similar, in terms of take-offs, speed down the line, paddling, etc. etc..  Any comments or thoughts regarding shape, weight, what have you are most welcome.

Gear Talk / Who makes the best boards?
« on: November 26, 2010, 10:31:09 AM »
With a primary focus on surfing, but also considering ease of paddling and catching waves, what boards do you think are good?  Are Jimmy Lewis boards good? (Hanalei, Mano,...?)  How do they compare with Pearson-Lairds? (Not the giant ones: 10'6", 10" or smaller.) Where do Angulo and Nash fit in? Any others you would recommend?
